The Face of the Estate

The Kaname Family Residence Front Nagayamon Gate (要家住宅表長屋門, Kaname-ke Jūtaku Omote-nagayamon) is a later-Edo-period Nagayamon, a gatehouse with rooms built into its wings, at the entrance to the Kaname family estate in Hatakenaka 2-chome, Kaizuka, Osaka Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on June 28, 2017.

Set along the south side of the lot, it stretches 18 ken, a single-storey Dozo-zukuri structure with clay-plastered walls under a gabled roof of hongawara tile. Its building area of 139 square metres makes it the largest building among the eleven listings. Gatehouses of this type fronted samurai residences and the homes of leading farm families. This one has two separate entrances.

Why It Was Listed

The Kaname Family Residence Front Nagayamon Gate was registered as a model of architectural form. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a gatehouse that shows well the standing of an old leading family.

The two entrances are the key. One, the formal gate, leads to the Front Shoin; the other, the kitchen gate, leads to the main house. The domain lord and honored guests went one way, daily traffic the other. Guest and household were separated at the very first threshold.

The rooms in the wings tell the same story. According to the Agency, they included quarters prepared for the lord's visits, a storage barn and a stable. A room for receiving a lord and a stall for a horse under one long roof: the Kaname were at once officers of domain government and a working farm family, and the gatehouse holds both roles.

What to Look For

Start with the length. The run of 18 ken of thick clay wall beneath heavy tile is what defines the Kaname Family Residence to anyone passing outside. The fireproof construction made even the gate part of the estate's defenses.

The formal gate is 2.7 metres wide and hung with double-leaf board doors. To its east is a kuguri-do, a small wicket door that let people pass without opening the main leaves. The wicket probably served for everyday use, the great doors for the lord's visits and ceremonies. Compare the two entrances and it is easy to tell, even from the street, which was meant for guests.

Behind the gatehouse, joined at a right angle, stands the Inner Nagayamon Gate. It cannot be seen from outside, but it sorted guests entering by the formal gate from family members coming in through the kitchen gate. The two gatehouses were planned together as the entry to the whole estate.

Visiting

The Kaname Family Residence Front Nagayamon Gate belongs to a private home, and there is no entry beyond it. Because it faces the street, however, the exterior can be seen from outside the grounds. Of the eleven Kaname listings, only this gate and the earthen walls can be viewed this way.

No viewing events or special openings were announced as of September 25, 2026. Keep photographs to the gate and its walls, and do not aim a camera through an open gate or at the house. The lane in front is a residential street, so avoid lingering where you might block traffic.
