Katano Tenjin Shrine

Katano Tenjin Shrine (交野天神社) in Kuzuhaoka, Hirakata City, Osaka Prefecture, has two halls designated as an Important Cultural Property on April 5, 1917, a date of designation under the former law: its main hall of 1402 and the main hall of its Hachiman sub-shrine, of the mid-Muromachi period (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Both are owned by the shrine.

According to Hirakata City, both are one-bay nagare-style halls roofed in cypress bark; the ridge tag of the main hall records construction in 1402, and the sub-shrine hall is thought to be of the same period. The two are the oldest buildings in Hirakata.

The Two Halls

The main hall is a one-bay nagare-style hall roofed in cypress bark, and two ridge tags are designated with it (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Hachiman sub-shrine hall, dedicated to one of the minor deities of the precinct, takes the same one-bay nagare form under cypress bark (Agency for Cultural Affairs), so the two can be compared side by side. Each hall is described on its own page.
