About the Shotokukan Guardian Shrine
The Shotokukan Guardian Shrine (樟徳館鎮守社, Shōtokukan Chinjusha) is a small shrine building of 1939 in Hishiyanishi 2-chome, Higashiosaka City, Osaka Prefecture, and it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on October 18, 2000. It was set up as the yashikigami, the household guardian deity, of Shotokukan, the former private home of Mori Heizo, founder of the Shoin Gakuen schools, and is known as "Hachiman-san."
The Shotokukan Guardian Shrine sits at the back of the northwest corner of the grounds, just south of the storehouse. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database records it as a single-story timber building roofed in Dōban-buki copper sheet, with a floor area of 3.3 square meters. It is the smallest of the six registered Shotokukan structures, less than one three-hundredth the size of the main house (1,169 square meters).
Why It Was Registered
The Shotokukan Guardian Shrine was registered as a model of form. According to the Agency's commentary, the shrine is built in the Hachiman-zukuri style and modeled on the main sanctuary of Usa Jingu in Usa, Oita Prefecture, regarded as the head shrine of all Hachiman shrines in Japan. Here that form is reproduced in a shrine building of just 3.3 square meters.
A yashikigami is a deity enshrined in a corner of a property to protect the house and its land, a custom found widely at merchant and farm households. The Shotokukan Guardian Shrine was built in 1939 alongside the main house, storehouse, gate and walls, and registered on the same day. The list of six makes clear that when the estate was laid out, a shrine for its guardian deity was planned along with the house and storehouse.
A Hachiman-zukuri Shrine on a Three-Tier Base
In Hachiman-zukuri, two gabled buildings stand one behind the other and are joined into a single shrine, with a valley where their roofs meet. From the side, the profile shows two ridgelines in a row. The Shotokukan Guardian Shrine fits that front-and-back arrangement into a building of only 3.3 square meters.
Kerbstones mark out a plot 6.7 meters wide and 4.7 meters deep around the shrine. In the middle, granite has been laid to form a base that appears as three tiers, and the shrine stands on top. Lifted on its stone platform and ringed by kerbstones, the little building sits in a clearly marked sacred plot within the estate.
Seeing the Shotokukan Guardian Shrine
The Shotokukan Guardian Shrine is at the back of the northwest corner, on the opposite side of the grounds from the gate and the road along the Nagase River. We have not confirmed whether it can be seen from outside the walls.
The only chance to get near the Shotokukan Guardian Shrine is the public opening the school holds once every four years. Even then, we found no statement on whether visitors may approach the shrine's plot. It is a shrine to the household deity, so if you do see it, look quietly from outside the kerbstones.
