About United Church of Christ in Japan Minami Osaka Church Tower

United Church of Christ in Japan Minami Osaka Church Tower (日本基督教団南大阪教会塔, Nihon Kirisuto Kyōdan Minami Ōsaka Kyōkai Tō) is a reinforced concrete church tower in Hannan-cho, Abeno Ward, Osaka City, completed in 1928 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2025. It was designed by Murano Tōgo (村野藤吾), one of Osaka's leading architects, and belongs to what is regarded as his first real work.

Minami Osaka Church was founded on February 7, 1926. Two years later, in 1928, a wooden chapel and this concrete tower were finished under Murano's design and supervision. At the time Murano was still employed in the office of the architect Watanabe Setsu, so the church predates his own practice. According to the City of Osaka, the builder was Okamoto Komuten.

Over time the wooden chapel became worn and too small for the congregation, and it was replaced in 1981. The new chapel was also Murano's design, completed 3 years before his death. The tower was kept and repaired, and it is the tower alone, 1 building, that is on the national register.

Why the Minami Osaka Church Tower Was Registered

Following a recommendation by the Council for Cultural Affairs on March 21, 2025, United Church of Christ in Japan Minami Osaka Church Tower was registered on August 6, 2025, as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (registration number 27-0948), under the criterion of serving as a model of design.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the tower as part of Murano's debut work and a valuable record of his early interest in shaping reinforced concrete. It is a 3-storey reinforced concrete structure with a rooftop section, finished in mortar, with a building area of just 11 square meters. Osaka Bunkazai Navi, a heritage database for Osaka, puts the plan at roughly 3 meters square.

The City of Osaka added the church to its Living Architecture Museum Osaka Selection in 2023, and the church notes that it was chosen as an urban landscape asset of Abeno Ward in 2016.

Part of the tower's significance is its setting: Murano's earliest and one of his last works stand side by side. The church recalls that Murano called the building "my eldest son" and remained deeply attached to it.

What to See at the Minami Osaka Church Tower

Start with the south face of United Church of Christ in Japan Minami Osaka Church Tower. Its central strip projects forward and carries a band of Sukashibori openwork in which circles and crosses alternate. That repeated pattern gives the plain, box-like shaft its character, and a cross stands at the very top.

The City of Osaka's commentary sees in this geometric composition the influence of the church at Le Raincy in France, designed by Auguste Perret. The young Murano was testing what reinforced concrete could do, on a very small scale.

Then compare the tower with the 1981 chapel behind it. Where the young Murano worked in crisp geometry, the elderly Murano shaped the chapel from broad, flowing curves. Two buildings by the same architect, 53 years apart, can be taken in from a single spot.

The church fronts the old Koshin Kaido road. Osaka Bunkazai Navi notes that when the tower went up, the area still had well-built row houses and open fields, against which the church stood out clearly.
