What the East Storehouse Is
The Uno Family Residence East Storehouse (宇野家住宅東土蔵, Uno-ke Jūtaku Higashi Dozō) in Kitamachi, Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture, is a 2-storey Dozo-zukuri storehouse of the late Edo period (1830 to 1867) that became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 18, 2003. It has a Hongawarabuki tiled roof and a building area of 26 square meters.
The Uno Family Residence East Storehouse stands in the southeast corner of the garden behind the main house. The Agency for Cultural Affairs believes it went up at about the same time as the main house.
A Store for Kyōgen Costumes
What sets the Uno Family Residence East Storehouse apart is what it once held. According to the Agency, the Uno family belonged to the kyōgen players attached to Gansenji temple, and this storehouse kept the kyōgen costumes used at the temple's takigi-nō performances.
Kyōgen is the comic theater that shares the stage with Noh, and takigi-nō is Noh performed outdoors by firelight. Kaizuka City describes Gansenji as the central temple of Kaizuka's old temple town. A family of metal casters took part in the temple's theater and kept its wardrobe at home, which gives this plain storehouse a place in the town's religious life.
Roof Framing on a Ridge Beam
The Uno Family Residence East Storehouse measures 2 by 3 ken, which the Agency calls the standard size for a storehouse.
Its roof rests on a beam called a jimune that runs the length of the building, with Nobori-bari sloping beams laid onto it from both sides. The west storehouse on the same property has no such beam and carries its Munagi ridgepole another way. Built in different periods, the two storehouses frame their roofs on different principles.
It is listed as register no. 27-0221, on the criterion that it contributes to the historic landscape of the country.
Seeing the East Storehouse
The Uno Family Residence East Storehouse stands behind the main house in the southeast of the garden. Judging from the layout it is hard to see from the old Kishū Kaidō, and the interior is not open.
