What the High Wall Is
The Uno Family Residence High Wall (宇野家住宅高塀, Uno-ke Jūtaku Takabei) in Kitamachi, Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture, is a tiled wooden wall of the Meiji period (1868 to 1911) that became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 18, 2003. It runs for 7.3 meters.
The Uno Family Residence High Wall stands on the western frontage of the property, facing the old Kishū Kaidō highway, and fills the gap between the main house and the west storehouse. The Agency for Cultural Affairs classes it not as a building but as another kind of structure.
Six Bays of Board and Clay
The 7.3 meters are divided into 6 bays. Below waist height the wall is faced with vertical boards; above, it is earthen plaster, and a small Sangawara-buki tiled roof runs along the top.
In the third bay from the north, the lower boarding can be lifted out. Behind it is a single sliding door, and this is the way into the garden inside the grounds. What looks like a stretch of wall becomes a doorway once the boards come off.
Finishing the Street Front
The Agency values the Uno Family Residence High Wall as part of what gives the townhouse its street face. Seen from the highway, the wall closes the space between the front of the main house and the west storehouse, so the western frontage reads as one continuous line.
It is listed as register no. 27-0224, on the criterion that it contributes to the historic landscape of the country.
Seeing the High Wall
Because it faces the street, the Uno Family Residence High Wall can be seen in full from the public road along the old Kishū Kaidō. The change from boarding to plaster and the removable third bay are visible from the street. The grounds, including the garden behind the door, are not open.
