What Is the Yokoyama Family Residence Barn?

The Yokoyama Family Residence Barn (横山家住宅納屋, Yokoyama-ke Jūtaku Naya) is a two-storey earthen-walled barn of the late Edo period (1830 to 1868) at the rear of the Yokoyama Family Residence in Johokucho, Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2013.

The Yokoyama Family Residence Barn stands just east of the storehouse, its ridge running east to west. It measures 10 m along the ridge (Ketayuki) by 5 m across (Harima) and covers 63 m². The Kirizuma-zukuri gabled roof is laid in Sangawara-buki pantiles; a Geya lean-to runs along the south side, and toward its east end a pickling room projects outward.

Why the Barn Was Registered

The Yokoyama Family Residence Barn was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a barn of solid, weighty character that, together with the storehouse to its west, gives the rear of the estate its dignity.

A naya was a working building for tools, firewood and household supplies, and was often a plain timber structure. This one was built in Dozo-zukuri fashion instead, with its walls plastered right up to the eaves. Set at right angles to the small north-south storehouse, the long east-west barn forms a second cluster of buildings at the back of the plot.

What to Look For

The barn's walls are finished in Shikkui lime plaster up to the eaves, and lattice windows on the south side of the upper floor let in light and air. Compared with the storehouse's small hooded openings, these are latticed windows, so the two white-walled buildings wear different expressions.

The south lean-to is a lower roof extended from the main wall, sheltering a strip of space for work and storage. The pickling room projecting at its east end was where vegetables were salted and left to cure, a piece of daily household life given its own place in the plan.

At 10 m, the barn is exactly twice the length of the neighboring storehouse (5 m), and its building area is exactly three times as large. At the back of the estate, the Yokoyama Family Residence Barn runs the longest earthen wall on the property from east to west.

Visiting the Yokoyama Family Residence Barn

The Yokoyama Family Residence Barn is part of a private home and its interior is not open. It stands at the rear of the plot, behind the main house and retirement building as seen from the street to the south, so it cannot be viewed up close.

Parts of the estate are said to be opened occasionally, but no source says if the barn is among them (as of October 2026). The layout of the whole estate and directions are on the Yokoyama Family Residence page.
