What Is the Yokoyama Family Residence Storehouse?

The Yokoyama Family Residence Storehouse (横山家住宅蔵, Yokoyama-ke Jūtaku Kura) is a two-storey earthen-walled storehouse of the late Edo period (1830 to 1868) at the rear of the Yokoyama Family Residence in Johokucho, Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2013.

The Yokoyama Family Residence Storehouse stands just west of the barn with its ridge running north to south. It measures 5 m along the ridge (Ketayuki) by 4.1 m across (Harima), with a building area of 21 m². Its Kirizuma-zukuri gabled roof is laid in Hongawarabuki, and it is the only one of the five registered structures roofed this way.

Why the Storehouse Was Registered

The Yokoyama Family Residence Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs values it as a storehouse that rounds out the layout of the estate.

Behind the main house, once an inn, stand this Dozo-zukuri storehouse for the family's goods and the barn to its east. With these service buildings surviving alongside the street-front house, you can see what an Edo-period house plot in a castle town was actually made of.

What to Look For

The Yokoyama Family Residence Storehouse is entered at its south gable end, a Tsumairi arrangement, and a small roof shelters the doorway. The walls are finished in Shikkui lime plaster, and a slim Hachimaki band runs beneath the eaves: a thickened strip of plaster that protects the eave line of an earthen storehouse from fire.

The lower walls are faced with vertical boards to a fairly high level, shielding the plaster. Small windows open on the upper floor of the south side and on both floors of the west side, each with its own little hood. White plaster, a slim band, tall boarding and hooded windows: this 21 m² building carries the full vocabulary of a Japanese storehouse.

Hongawarabuki alternates flat tiles with half-round cover tiles. It is heavier and more laborious than pantile roofing, and the other buildings on the estate use pantiles, so the storehouse stands apart in this respect.

Visiting the Yokoyama Family Residence Storehouse

The Yokoyama Family Residence Storehouse is part of a private home and its interior is not open. It stands at the rear of the plot, behind the main house and retirement building as seen from the street to the south, so it cannot be viewed up close.

Parts of the estate are said to be opened occasionally, but no source says if the storehouse is among them (as of October 2026). The layout of the whole estate and directions are on the Yokoyama Family Residence page.
