A Small Bridge over a Village Canal
The stone bridge crosses the waterway in front of the former Fujii estate. Settlements across the Koto district east of Lake Biwa are threaded with such channels, and houses here often face a canal along the road. The bridge is only 1.2 meters long, but it flares in plan from 4.8 meters at the back to 5.8 meters at the front, opening wider toward the street.
The estate behind it was built by the Omi merchant Fujii Hikoshiro (1876-1956). Small crossings like this were ordinary infrastructure, yet they shaped the look of a canal-lined merchant village. The bridge dates from around 1934.
