A 1.8-Metre Gate Leading to the Entrance Hall
Guzeiji Temple Middle Gate (弘誓寺中門, Guzeiji Chūmon) is a late Edo-period Yakuimon gate in Takebe Shimono-chō, Higashiōmi City, Shiga Prefecture, built between the later eighteenth and earlier nineteenth centuries and entered on the national register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2021. It does not stand on the axis from the front gate to the main hall. It was built as the way in to the entrance hall attached to the priests' quarters.
The opening is a single bay 1.8 metres wide, closed by a pair of Mairado doors with panelled lower sections. The roof is laid in Sangawara-buki pantiles. Bracing posts stand behind the main posts and are tied to them by beams that carry the eaves purlin. The Taruki rafters are set well apart, and the roof is given a pronounced upward curve.
Of the five buildings registered at this temple, Guzeiji Temple Middle Gate is the smallest. The Agency for Cultural Affairs still calls it a gate of dignity despite its size.
Crests in the Woodwork and the Tiles
The criterion applied was contribution to the historic landscape, and what the Agency singles out is the heraldry. The plank doors carry a tachibana citrus in Sukashibori openwork; the Onigawara ridge-end tile bears the igeta well-frame crest; and the round tile ends along the eaves repeat the tachibana. The Agency's description states that these indicate a connection with the Ii family.
The tachibana and the igeta are both closely tied to the Ii, lords of Hikone through the Edo period. Their repetition across three different parts of one small gate suggests the family had some hand in the circumstances of its building. What that hand was is another matter: no document setting out the connection appears in the Agency for Cultural Affairs database or in Higashiōmi City's cultural property listings, and the point is better left open than filled in.
Guzeiji Temple Middle Gate was registered on 26 February 2021 with the front gate, entrance hall, priests' quarters and bell tower. The main hall of 1788 became a city-designated cultural property on 17 March 2023. A Registered Tangible Cultural Property is registered, not designated; the two systems run in parallel.
What to Look At
Everything worth seeing here is small. Go first to the plank doors and find the citrus. Fruit and leaves are cut clean through the board, so when the light is behind the gate the shape comes through as an outline of brightness.
Then look up. The ridge-end tile carries the well-frame crest, and the circular tile ends along the eaves repeat the citrus. The same two motifs appear at three heights, and hunting for them walks you around the whole gate, which is presumably the point.
Structurally, watch the roof line. Widely spaced rafters combined with a strong upward curve give a gate of 1.8 metres a taut profile it has no right to at that size. Beyond it waits the entrance hall, a large building with a cusped-gable porch, and Guzeiji Temple Middle Gate works as its announcement.
Visiting
The gate stands in the open precinct and its exterior can be viewed from there. Passing through is not possible: beyond it lie the entrance hall and priests' quarters, which are the living quarters of the temple. Guzeiji is a working parish temple rather than a sightseeing temple, and no visiting hours or admission fee have been published for Guzeiji Temple Middle Gate; neither the Agency for Cultural Affairs database nor Higashiōmi City's cultural property listings records any, as checked in September 2026.

The nearest station is Kawabe-no-Mori on the Ōmi Railway Main Line, about 600 metres to the north-west, roughly a ten-minute walk. Trains are infrequent and the station unstaffed, so a taxi from Yōkaichi Station is a practical alternative. By car, allow about ten minutes from the Yōkaichi interchange on the Meishin Expressway.
