A Gate Above Anoshu Stone Walls

The Jisseibo Gate (實成坊門) is the yakuimon gate of a sub-temple of the end of the Edo period (1830 to 1867) in Sakamotohonmachi, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on October 12, 2001 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a timber gate with a tiled roof, 2.3 metres wide; registration number 25-0165.

The Gate of a Saikyoji Sub-Temple

Jisseibo is one of the sub-temples of Saikyoji that have continued since the Edo period (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The gate on the south of its site is a one-bay yakuimon gate with widely spaced rafters and a pantiled roof.

The bracketing is a plain carved bracket arm, but the tie beam and king strut in the gable are its highlight (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes how the gate and the anoshu-style stone walls on either side together shape the view of the approach, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.

What to Look For

Look for the tie beam and king strut in the gable and the anoshu stone walls running off on both sides (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
