The Small Hall Between Two Larger Ones
Oka Shrine Norito Hall (乎加神社祝詞殿, Oka Jinja Noritoden) is a gabled timber link hall of 1892 standing between the Offering Hall and the Main Hall of Oka Shrine in Jingocho, Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 18 March 2003. It is 2 bays by 1 bay in a Kirizuma-zukuri form and covers only 9.6 square metres.
Norito are the formal prayers a Shinto priest recites before the deity, and this is the room where that happens. The Oka Shrine Norito Hall bridges the gap between the Offering Hall in front and the Main Hall behind. The Agency for Cultural Affairs says it is thought to have been built at the same time as the Main Hall was set up here.
Why It Was Registered
The Oka Shrine Norito Hall was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape. The Agency calls it indispensable to the composition of the shrine buildings.
Take it away and the ensemble falls apart. In front is the long, low Offering Hall; behind it is the tall Shinmei-zukuri Main Hall. The two differ in form and in height, and the Norito Hall holds them together on one axis.
Its floor is raised to the level of the Offering Hall, which suggests the two rooms were meant to be used together as one ritual space.
What to Look For
Look at the upper walls. Above the head-height Nageshi tie beam, the band of wall is filled with lozenge-lattice transoms, Ranma, which let air and light through and keep the little hall open. The same diagonal lattice appears on the porch of the Offering Hall, on the Tamagaki Fence and on the Purification Pavilion. Here it is easy to see that one motif runs through the whole group.
The roof is a simple gable in copper, echoing the gabled form of the Main Hall. Wedged low between the stepped roofs of the Offering Hall and the tall Main Hall, it is easy to overlook, but comparing the three rooflines shows how they rise in stages toward the back.
Seeing It
The Oka Shrine Norito Hall stands inside the Tamagaki Fence and its interior is not open. Its front abuts the Offering Hall and its back the Main Hall, so only the sides are visible.
Walk along the fence to either side and look across at the space between the Offering Hall and the Main Hall to see the lattice transoms and the gable. It is some distance away, so good daylight helps.
