A hip-and-gable office with a formal porch
Otori Shrine Office (大鳥神社社務所, Ōtori Jinja Shamusho) is the administrative building southwest of the shrine buildings at Otori Shrine in Toriino, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, built in 1919 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2002.
It is a single-storey wooden building with an Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable roof in Sangawara-buki tile. At 177 square metres it is by far the largest of the seven registered buildings. It faces east, and at the centre of the front a formal entrance porch (Shikidai) projects under a karahafu gable, the curved gable turned to face the visitor.
A shamusho is where a shrine handles its business and receives callers, and the shrine's website still gives the Otori Shrine Office as its contact point. According to the shrine, the previous office was lost in the Taisho-era fire.
Six rooms in two rows
Otori Shrine Office carries registration number 25-0199, the last in the run of seven, and was registered as a model of form.
Inside, 6 rooms are laid out in 2 rows, with an earth-floored area (Doma) at the south end. Nageshi rails run around the rooms at door-head height and again just below the ceiling, drawing two horizontal lines across every wall.
The principal reception room has the full formal set: a Tokonoma alcove, display shelves and a built-in writing bay (Tsukeshoin). Neatly carved transoms (Ranma) sit between the rooms. Where the shrine buildings are ritual structures roofed in bark and copper, the office follows the conventions of a residential reception suite.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the design simple and refined. Ornament is confined to the porch and the transoms, and the rest is ordered by the horizontal rails.
The porch gable from the east
Because Otori Shrine Office faces east, you see its porch from the precinct side. The curve of the karahafu sits against the middle of the broad main roof and marks the centre of a long, low building.
To appreciate its length, stand back far enough to take in the whole front. After the compact shrine buildings, 177 square metres on a single floor feels generous.
The alcove, writing bay and carved transoms are all indoors and cannot be seen from outside.
Visiting Otori Shrine Office
Otori Shrine Office is a working office, and its exterior can be viewed from the grounds. The shrine publishes no information about access to the reception rooms.
Requests for prayers and other enquiries go through the Otori Shrine Office (phone 0748-88-2008). Because it is in daily use, please do not step up onto the porch or peer in at the windows. There are no published photography rules. Getting there by rail or car is covered on the Otori Shrine page.
