Where the climb begins with water
The Purification Pavilion (Temizusha) of Tarobogu Aga Shrine is where visitors rinse hands and mouth before proceeding to worship. Built in 1911, it is an open timber pavilion with a copper-shingled roof, small at about 5.0 square metres, placed so that the act of cleansing marks the transition from ordinary ground to sacred precinct on Mount Akagami.
A small rite with a long history
Temizu, the ritual washing at a shrine entrance, is a gesture of purification that predates almost everything built around it. A dedicated pavilion gives that rite a fixed, sheltered place. This one dates to the late Meiji period, part of the sequence of construction that outfitted the mountain precinct, and it was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2019 for contributing to the historic landscape.
An easy thing to overlook
Open on its sides and modest in scale, the Purification Pavilion is the sort of building a hurrying visitor uses without really seeing. Yet its copper roof, weathered green, and its careful timber frame place it firmly among the shrine's registered structures. Pausing at the water basin, before the long stair, is the small ritual pause that the whole ascent is built around.
