What the Fujita Family Residence Front Gate is
The Fujita Family Residence Front Gate (藤田家住宅表門, Fujita-ke Jūtaku Omotemon) is a late Edo period timber gate in Gotsucho, Gotsu City, Shimane Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 8, 2009.
It is a one-bay munamon, a ridge-roofed gate on two posts, 1.7 meters wide; the Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to 1830 to 1867. The Fujita Family Residence Front Gate stands on Honmachi-dori directly in front of the forecourt of the reception rooms of the main house, the entrance used by guests, and together with the wall on either side it forms the face of the estate on the street.
How the gate is put together
On the Fujita Family Residence Front Gate, square posts rise from a sill and are tied at the top by a kabuki crossbeam. Above it sit two further members, a lower one called the mebari and an upper one called the obari, and a short strut on these carries the munagi ridge beam.
The eaves use a double layer of closely spaced taruki rafters, a form usually reserved for more formal buildings. The gabled kirizuma-zukuri roof is laid with sangawara pantiles. That is a lot of structure for a gate only 1.7 meters wide.
Clouds and carved scrolls
The carving is the reason to stop at the Fujita Family Residence Front Gate. The lower mebari is shaped like a cloud bracket, and the upper obari is incised with eyō, the linear decorative scrollwork of Japanese carpentry.
The gable ends carry more. A pendant gegyo board hangs below the ridge, and the fin-like pieces on either side of it are carved with cloud patterns. For its size, the gate is densely ornamented.

The Fujita Family Residence Front Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic streetscape. It opens directly onto Honmachi-dori and runs into the 26-meter wall that encloses the forecourts. Placed before the reception-room forecourt, it gave the street front its most welcoming face.
The gate and the wall are the two parts of the estate dated to the late Edo period. The gate is also the only one of the eight whose roof is recorded as plain pantiles; the main house, storehouses and wall are all listed with red Sekishu tiles.
Visiting the Fujita Family Residence Front Gate
The Fujita Family Residence Front Gate faces the street and can be seen head-on from Honmachi-dori. It is the gate of a private home, however, and visitors may not pass through it into the forecourt.
The cloud-shaped mebari and carved obari are easiest to see standing in front of the gate and looking up. For the carved gable pieces, move a little along the street and look from an angle. Take photographs from the public road and keep clear of traffic.
