About the Yamamoto Family Residence New Storehouse
The Yamamoto Family Residence New Storehouse (山本家住宅新蔵, Yamamoto-ke Jūtaku Shingura) is a fireproof earthen storehouse in Mori, Hakuta-cho, Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, built in 1884 and entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2005. It stands behind the main house, next to the front storehouse on its west side, and held the family's clothing. The two-story Dozo-zukuri building covers 19 square meters.
It dates from 1884, the same year as the main house on the street, so the clothing store was built alongside the new house. The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the Yamamoto Family Residence New Storehouse as a building that sets a model of form and describes it as solidly built.
Double Doors and a Plaster Band
Like its neighbor, the Yamamoto Family Residence New Storehouse has a gabled roof (Kirizuma-zukuri) of pantiles (Sangawara-buki) running east to west, set on the earthen body as an Okiyane. The two storehouses match in roof form and orientation, and side by side they read as a pair.
The entrance is on the south, closed by double doors that swing open from the center (Kannon-biraki) and covered by a lean-to eave (Geya). Around the top of the walls runs a Hachimaki, a thick band of plaster that protects the eaves from fire and rain. The west wall is clad in vertical boards.
The base is laid in cut stone, its faces dressed by tapping, where the front storehouse next door has a stone base with vents instead.
Why It Was Registered, and What to Notice
The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the Yamamoto Family Residence New Storehouse as sturdy from its outer walls to its frame. Double doors, a plaster band at the eaves and dressed foundation stones add up to a full set of defenses against fire and damp for the clothes kept inside.
The best way to read it is against the front storehouse. The roof is the same, but the doors change to double doors, the band appears at the top of the walls, and the stonework is finished differently. Of the four storehouses at the Yamamoto Family Residence, it is the only one the Agency for Cultural Affairs describes as sturdy.
Visiting the Yamamoto Family Residence New Storehouse
No public opening of the Yamamoto Family Residence New Storehouse has been announced, and the interior cannot be seen. Standing behind the main house and west of the front storehouse, it is hard to make out from the road.
