About the Yamamoto Family Residence Rear Nagaya
The Yamamoto Family Residence Rear Nagaya (山本家住宅裏長屋, Yamamoto-ke Jūtaku Uranagaya) is a two-story outbuilding in Mori, Hakuta-cho, Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, built in the late Edo period (1830 to 1867) and entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2005. A nagaya is a long, plain building; this one stands on the western edge of the long, narrow Yamamoto plot and covers 47 square meters.
After the main house it is the largest of the seven Yamamoto buildings, and along with the kamaya and small storehouse it is the oldest. The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the Yamamoto Family Residence Rear Nagaya for its contribution to the historic landscape, noting how it gives shape to the back of the estate.
An Earth-Floored Gateway and Two Rooms Upstairs
The Yamamoto Family Residence Rear Nagaya is a two-story building with exposed posts (Shinkabe) and a gabled pantile roof (Kirizuma-zukuri, Sangawara-buki) whose ridge runs north to south. Every other outbuilding on the plot runs east to west; the rear nagaya turns at right angles to them and stretches across the western end of the property.
At the south end of the ground floor is an earth-floored gateway (Doma), with a washing place beside it, and at the north end a single board-floored room. A lean-to (Geya) projects from the east side of that room, and the gable walls are clad in vertical boards. Upstairs there are two rooms, one to the north and one to the south.
The earth-floored gateway suggests the building also served as a back entrance to the estate from the west. With a washing place, a board-floored room and two rooms upstairs, it could serve for work and for sleeping.
Why It Was Registered, and What to Notice
The Yamamoto Family Residence Rear Nagaya marks the far end of the estate. Seen from the main house, it closes off the back of the property, and that position is why the Agency for Cultural Affairs cites its contribution to the landscape.
Two things stand out: its ridge set crosswise to every other building on the plot, and its age. A building older than the 1884 main house survives at the very back of the estate.
Visiting the Yamamoto Family Residence Rear Nagaya
No public opening of the Yamamoto Family Residence Rear Nagaya has been announced, and the interior cannot be seen. It stands at the western end of the plot, as far from the road as it is possible to be, so do not expect to see it from the street.
