About the Ota Family Residence in Sano

The Ota Family Residence (太田家住宅, Ōta-ke Jūtaku) is a merchant family's estate in Yamatocho and Tenmyocho, Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, whose seven structures, built between the late Edo period and the early Showa period, were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2021.

The Ota family dealt in gofuku and futomono, the silk kimono fabrics and the everyday cotton and hemp cloth that Japanese drapers traditionally sold side by side. They were already trading in the Edo period, and in modern times they took up farming and moved into finance as well. The estate sits in central Sano. Its public face is a fireproof shop building on the street; the family house runs back from it, storehouses line up behind that, and two small household shrines stand at the south and north ends of the plot.

Houses with the same name exist elsewhere in Japan, in Tomo, Fukuyama City, and in Taragi, Kumamoto Prefecture, but they belong to other families. This page is about the Ota estate in Sano.

Seven Structures, One Registration Day

All seven parts of the Ota Family Residence were registered on 26 February 2021 under consecutive numbers 09-257 to 09-263. Each was listed for its contribution to the historic landscape. The national database gives these dates and sizes:

  • Shop storehouse and main house: around 1875. Earthen-walled storehouse construction, two storeys, tiled roof, building area 145 m²
  • Middle storehouse: around 1875. Earthen-walled, partly timber, two storeys, tiled roof, 76 m²
  • West storehouse: around 1875. Earthen-walled, two storeys, tiled roof, 59 m²
  • South storehouse: late Edo period. Earthen-walled, two storeys, tiled roof, 59 m²
  • Front gate and stone wall: early Showa period. Stone; gate opening 2.4 m, wall 9.8 m long
  • Hachimansha Shrine: around 1881. Timber, single storey, copper roof, 0.2 m²
  • Inarisha Shrine: around 1881. Timber, single storey, tiled roof, 0.5 m²

The oldest is the south storehouse, which the Agency for Cultural Affairs places in the late Edo period, between 1830 and 1868. The shop, the house and the middle and west storehouses went up together around 1875, and the two shrines followed about six years later. The stone gate and wall date from the early Showa years between 1926 and 1945, which makes them the newest piece.

Put together, the estate took roughly a century to reach its present shape.

Readings differ slightly between sources. The national database reads 主屋 (main house) as omoya and 見世蔵 as misegura, while the Tochigi prefectural pages give the storehouse names without the voiced g, as misekura and nakakura. This site follows the national database.

How the Ota Estate Is Laid Out

Reading the database descriptions one after another gives a fair picture of the plan. The shop storehouse faces the street. The main house joins it on the west, its ridge turned at a right angle. West of the house the middle storehouse fills the centre of the plot, and west again the west storehouse runs north to south. The south storehouse holds the south-west corner, and together with the west storehouse it closes off the western edge of the Ota Family Residence.

South of the shop stands the front gate, set in the middle of a stone wall 3.9 m high. The shop had its own door for customers; this gate was the formal way into the household. The Hachimansha Shrine stands in the southern part of the plot and the Inarisha Shrine in the rear garden to the north. The Inarisha Shrine alone carries a Tenmyocho address, but the database places it on the northern side of the same estate.

The further you go from the street, the more private the building: shop, house, storehouses, and finally the shrines at the back. At the Ota Family Residence each of those buildings became a registration in its own right, and each has its own page on this site.

Visiting the Ota Family Residence

The Ota Family Residence is a private home. Tochigi Prefecture lists it as open for exterior viewing only, so visitors cannot enter the grounds and see it from the public road. There is no published rule on photography; keep pictures to what can be taken from the street and be considerate of the people who live here.

The buildings easiest to see are the shop storehouse on the street and the stone gate and wall just south of it. The middle, west and south storehouses and the two shrines stand inside the plot, and how much of them shows from the road has not been confirmed.

Sano Station on the JR Ryomo Line is about a 10-minute walk away, according to the prefectural listing (checked in October 2026). No visitor parking is mentioned in any source we found.
