About the Ota Family Residence Shop Storehouse and Main House
The Ota Family Residence Shop Storehouse and Main House (太田家住宅見世蔵及び主屋, Ōta-ke Jūtaku Misegura oyobi Omoya) is the fireproof shop on the street front of the Ota estate in Yamatocho, Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, together with the family house behind it, built around 1875 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2021.
The two buildings are registered as a single item with a combined building area of 145 m². The shop part is a Misegura, a store built with the thick clay walls of a storehouse so that stock and premises had a chance of surviving the fires that regularly swept Japanese towns. Here the Ota family sold silk kimono fabrics and everyday cotton and hemp cloth. The house joins the shop on its west side.
A Shop Built Like a Strongroom
The shop storehouse of the Ota Family Residence Shop Storehouse and Main House is a two-storey earthen-walled building with a gabled roof of pantiles. A lean-to roof, or Geya, runs across the whole front, giving shelter over the shop floor and the customers standing outside it.
The upper floor uses degeta construction, in which projecting beams carry the eaves forward. Those beams would normally be bare timber, but here the underside of the eaves is plastered over right up to the edge, so no wood is left exposed to sparks. The ridge is also built up high. The Agency for Cultural Affairs lists both features as typical of a shop storehouse.
Seen from the street, the building's sense of mass comes mostly from that tall ridge and the plaster-sealed eaves.
According to the database, it is this heavy shopfront that sets the character of the street. All seven structures at the Ota estate were registered for their contribution to the historic landscape, and from the road the shop storehouse is the one doing most of the work.
The House Behind the Shop
The main house is attached to the west side of the shop, with its ridge turned at a right angle to the shop's. It is two storeys high under a gabled pantile roof, with a lean-to on the south side. The division of labour is simple: business at the front, family life behind.
The middle and west storehouses carry the same date, around 1875. Shop, house and storehouses seem to have been built as one campaign, and the Ota Family Residence Shop Storehouse and Main House was at its centre.
Seeing the Ota Family Residence Shop Storehouse and Main House
The Ota Family Residence Shop Storehouse and Main House is part of a private home and the interior is not open. Tochigi Prefecture lists the property as open for exterior viewing only.
Because it stands on the street, the shop storehouse is the easiest part of the estate to see. From the opposite side of the road, look in turn at the lean-to across the front, the plastered eaves of the upper floor, and the high ridge. The main house lies behind the shop, and much of it is probably hidden from the road. Directions to the estate are on the page for the Ota Family Residence in Sano.
