About the Ota Family Residence Front Gate and Stone Wall

The Ota Family Residence Front Gate and Stone Wall (太田家住宅表門及び石塀, Ōta-ke Jūtaku Omotemon oyobi Ishibei) is the stone gateway and wall standing just south of the shop on the Ota estate in Yamatocho, Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, built in the early Showa period and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2021.

Gate and wall are registered together as one structure. The gate opening is 2.4 m wide and the wall runs 9.8 m in total. It is the newest of the seven registered pieces at the Ota Family Residence, dating from the early Showa years between 1926 and 1945, and it added a stone entrance to an estate of Edo and Meiji storehouses and shrines.

A Dressed-Stone Wall 3.9 m High

The wall of the Ota Family Residence Front Gate and Stone Wall is built of cut, squared stone laid in courses on a stone footing, and it stands 3.9 m high. For its full 9.8 m length it rises above the eaves of an ordinary single-storey house.

Dressed stone gives a very different surface from a rubble wall: flat faces and straight joints. Here that surface closes off the south side of the shop.

Lions on the Lintel

The gate is an opening 2.4 m wide in the middle of the wall. Square posts of granite stand on either side and carry a stone lintel, or Magusa. The gate leaves themselves are wooden, set inside the stone frame.

The lintel is what makes the Ota Family Residence Front Gate and Stone Wall memorable. It is cut with moulded profiles, and a carved lion sits at each end. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the design distinctive. The two lions look down on anyone approaching from the road.

The shop was the way in for customers. The stone gate was the way into the household, a formal entrance for the family that the Ota family chose to build in the early Showa period.

Seeing the Ota Family Residence Front Gate and Stone Wall

The Ota Family Residence Front Gate and Stone Wall is the entrance to a private home, and visitors cannot go through it. Tochigi Prefecture lists the property as open for exterior viewing only.

Standing just south of the shop storehouse, the gate is probably visible from the road together with the shop. Look for the lions at either end of the lintel and the joints of the dressed-stone wall, from a spot that does not block the gateway. The family uses the gate, so do not step inside even if the doors happen to be open. Directions to the estate are on the page for the Ota Family Residence in Sano.
