About the Ota Family Residence Hachimansha Shrine
The Ota Family Residence Hachimansha Shrine (太田家住宅八幡社, Ōta-ke Jūtaku Hachimansha) is a miniature timber shrine standing in the southern part of the Ota estate in Yamatocho, Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, built around 1881 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2021.
It has a building area of 0.2 m² and a copper roof. Dedicated to the deity Hachiman, it takes the form of a full-size shrine sanctuary, one bay wide with an irimoya (hip-and-gable) roof, scaled down to fit in a family's grounds.
Two Kinds of Gable on One Tiny Roof
On the front of the Ota Family Residence Hachimansha Shrine, a triangular Chidori-hafu gable sits on the roof slope, and below it a porch, or Kōhai, is covered by a karahafu, the curved gable that swells upward in the middle. Two different gables stacked on the front of a roof this small is a lot of work for the carpenter.
Round posts stand on a sill, tied at two heights by horizontal Nageshi. A veranda with a Kōran railing capped by Giboshi finials runs across the front and both sides.
Packed Brackets and Carved Beams
The eaves are carried on Degumi bracket sets, and they are arranged Tsumegumi style, placed between the posts as well as on top of them. On a shrine of 0.2 m², packing the brackets like this fills almost the whole underside of the eaves.
The carving on the tie beams (Kōryō) and on the projecting bracket ends is fine, and metal fittings are fixed at key points. The Agency for Cultural Affairs sums up the Ota Family Residence Hachimansha Shrine as small but finely made.
The Inarisha Shrine on the other side of the estate dates from the same years but is a plain gabled building with simple brackets. Of the two household shrines, it was this one that received the ornament.
Seeing the Ota Family Residence Hachimansha Shrine
The Ota Family Residence Hachimansha Shrine stands inside a private property, and visitors cannot enter to worship or look closely. Tochigi Prefecture lists the Ota estate as open for exterior viewing only.
The shrine is in the southern part of the plot, but it has not been confirmed whether it can be seen from the road. The national database includes photographs from the south-east and of the brackets under the roof, which show the packed bracketing well. This is also the family's place of worship, so please do not peer over the wall. Directions to the estate are on the page for the Ota Family Residence in Sano.
