Its footprint is eleven square metres. That figure is worth pausing over, because it is the whole building: a shed roofed in sheet metal, sloping in one direction, with mortar walls, a small canopy over the front, and sliding board doors. Inside there is no floor in the usual sense, only packed earth, divided into two rooms of unequal size. The larger one to the north held the motorcycles. The smaller one to the south was storage.
Structures this modest rarely acquire legal protection anywhere. Japan's registration system makes room for them, and the reasoning behind that is what makes this particular shed worth a detour.
How a Rural Branch Actually Worked
Banking in a mountain district in 1959 was not conducted entirely across a counter. Deposits were collected, loans were discussed and passbooks were updated at farmhouses and shopfronts scattered along the Yoshino River valley and up the side valleys, and the staff who did that work travelled. The garage is the physical trace of that routine. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the form as plain and notes that it conveys the character of the bank's operations in its day, which is an unusually direct statement for a database entry about a shed.
The finish repays attention. The walls are mortar with a sprayed rissin texture, the pebbly aggregate coating that was ubiquitous on modest Japanese buildings from the late 1950s onward, cheap to apply and durable enough to survive decades of weather without repainting. The single-pitch roof in sheet metal is the plainest possible solution to shedding rain off a small plan. The canopy over the doors exists to keep water off whoever was wrestling a machine in or out.
None of this is refined, and the registration does not claim that it is. The garage was accepted under the first registration criterion, "contributing to the historic landscape of the nation," while the bank building in front of it went in under the second criterion, "serving as a model of design." Two structures on one plot, registered on the same day, under different reasoning. The garage carries registration number 36-0223, the bank 36-0222.
Seeing It, and Why Bother
Be realistic about the experience. This is a service building at the back of a private plot, visible in glimpses rather than presented for view, and there is no interior opening. The point of walking round to look for it is not the object itself but the pairing.
Stand on the Iyo Kaidō in front of the bank first. The concrete facade is scored to imitate coursed stone, two storeys tall, doing everything a 1959 branch office could do to look solid and permanent to a farmer bringing in tobacco money. Then find the garage. Sheet metal, sprayed mortar, board doors, eleven square metres. The gap between the two is the whole argument: what a bank showed the street, and what a bank needed to actually function.
Practical points. Both buildings are privately owned. View from the public road and do not enter the grounds; photography from the street is fine. JR Tsuji Station on the JR Tokushima Line lies in the adjoining district of Goryōda, about ten minutes on foot to the west, and drivers can reach Tsuji from the Ikawa-Ikeda interchange on the Tokushima Expressway via National Route 192. The Miyoshi City Tourism Association (0883-76-0877) is the place to ask about guided walks or any special opening of the old street.
