Manpukuji Temple

Manpukuji Temple (萬福寺) in Nobuno, Nakacho, Tokushima Prefecture, has four structures registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on February 9, 2005: a main hall and storehouse of the late Edo period, a bell tower of the late Edo period and a guardian shrine of 1889 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). All are owned by the temple.

The Agency notes that the main hall faces south across the long east-west precinct with a six-room plan of the abbot's-quarters type. Its originally thatched hipped roof is ringed by tiled lean-to eaves, a farmhouse look known locally as shihobuta that shows regional character.

The Four Structures

West of the main hall stands a small shelf-style guardian shrine facing south, and to the south-west an open one-bay bell tower (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The bell tower's frog-leg struts and beam ends have a distinctive local form, with carved details of the mid-18th century.

In the east of the precinct is a two-storey storehouse with carefully plastered walls, a moulded cornice and a rare gable ornament with pine-shaped fins (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Around the farmhouse-like main hall, the shrine, bell tower and storehouse together make up the temple precinct. Each structure is described on its own page.
