Former Astronomical Observatory (First Platform): Where Sailors Learned to Read the Sky

Just inside the main gate at Etchujima, set among trees a little apart from the larger campus buildings, stands a small brick tower built in 1903 (Meiji 36). It looks almost domestic in scale, but its purpose was precise. A school that trained merchant navigators needed to teach celestial navigation, the art of fixing a ship's position by the sun and stars, and this First Observation Platform is where that instruction had a home on solid ground before students carried it out to sea.

The structure is a two-story building of brick with a sheet-metal roof and a footprint of only about 26 square metres. Its geometry rewards a slow look. The ground floor is laid out as an octagon; the upper floor becomes a circle, its outer wall finished in white plaster, and a dome caps the whole. The building is generally described as having housed an equatorial telescope, the type mounted so that a single motion tracks a star across the sky, though older records also refer to it by other instrument names.

Why It Is Protected

The First Platform is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, listed on 12 December 1997 and announced on 8 January 1998 under registration number 13-0006. Registration is the lighter of Japan's two heritage frameworks, distinct from the designation given to Important Cultural Properties and National Treasures, and it suits buildings that stay in place within a working institution.

What sets the observatory apart from the campus classroom buildings is the criterion under which it was listed: not easily reproducible. The two larger buildings nearby were registered as models of design, but the observatory earns its place through rarity. Very few purpose-built astronomical structures survive from the Meiji period, and this one is often said to be among the oldest surviving dome-roofed observation rooms in Japan. Its careful, small-scale construction is difficult to recreate, and that scarcity is precisely what the listing protects.

Seeing It Today

From outside you can follow the logic of the design with your eye. The octagon below gives the building a stable, faceted base; the circle above lets the dome turn. The dome was built to rotate a full circle by hand, so that its opening could be aimed at any part of the sky, and a telescope of roughly four inches in aperture is recorded as having stood beneath it. Time and use have taken their toll: the telescope's tube is lost and the instrument is no longer complete, but the shell that made the observation possible remains legible.

The observatory and its companion, the Second Platform, sit close together near the gate and can be seen from the campus grounds; the buildings themselves are not entered. They now form part of the Meiji Maru Maritime Museum, the cluster of heritage around the Important Cultural Property ship Meiji Maru, which opened to the public in this arrangement in 2016. Pairing a look at the observatories with a boarding of the ship gives you both halves of how this school taught the sea, by sky and by hull.
