Former Astronomical Observatory (Second Platform): The Small House Built for Time

Beside the domed First Platform near the Etchujima main gate stands its lower, quieter companion, the Second Observation Platform, also built in 1903 (Meiji 36). Where the first building turned a dome to follow the stars, this one held a meridian instrument, fixed on the imaginary north-south line overhead. Its job was not to chase the sky but to catch a single, exact moment: the instant a star crosses the meridian. From that instant a school could set precise time, and precise time was what navigators needed to work out a ship's longitude at sea.

The building is a single-story brick structure with a sheet-metal roof and a floor area of about 25 square metres. Its plan is a clean octagon, and above it sits an eight-sided pyramidal roof, a shape that reads clearly from any angle. The walls carry unusual openings placed for observation rather than for daylight, narrow slots aligned to let an instrument sight the passing sky. In its detailing the Second Platform closely follows the First, and the design of both is attributed to the architect Mitsuhashi Shiro, though the attribution is understood as a scholarly inference rather than a documented fact.

Why It Is Protected

The Second Platform is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, listed on 12 December 1997 and announced on 8 January 1998 under registration number 13-0007. Like its neighbour it was registered under the criterion of being not easily reproducible, the standard reserved for structures whose value lies in rarity rather than in setting a stylistic model.

Read the two observatories together and the reason for their joint survival becomes clear. They form a matched pair from the early years of the twentieth century, one for tracking and one for timing, built to the same hand and the same care. Purpose-built astronomical structures of the Meiji period are scarce, and a surviving pair that still shows the division of labour between an equatorial room and a meridian room is scarcer still. That completeness is difficult to recreate, which is exactly what the listing recognises.

Seeing It Today

The pleasure of the Second Platform is in reading its geometry against the First. The taller building rounds off into a dome; this one keeps its edges, an octagon rising to an octagonal point. Look for the narrow observation openings in the walls, which give away the building's function once you know what they are for. The two stand only steps apart, so a single stop takes in both the tracking of stars and the keeping of time, the twin skills behind any long ocean passage.

The observatory is viewed from the campus grounds and is not entered. It belongs to the Meiji Maru Maritime Museum, the group of heritage gathered around the Important Cultural Property ship Meiji Maru, which has been open to the public in this form since 2016. The ship is free to board and offers guided access, so a walk that starts at these small brick observatories can end on the deck of the vessel their graduates once sailed.
