What Is International Christian University Taizanso Front Gate?
International Christian University Taizanso Front Gate (国際基督教大学泰山荘表門, omotemon) is a thatched Yakuimon-style gate on the International Christian University campus in Osawa, Mitaka, Tokyo, built around 1936 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1999.
It stands a little south of the northern boundary of Taizanso and serves as the villa's formal entrance. The gate is timber with a Kayabuki thatched roof. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that it reflects the taste of Kameyama Sogetsu, the tea master said to have directed the construction of Taizanso, and describes it as a gate of considerable charm.
The dimensions come in two versions. The structure field of the Agency's database gives 5.0 metres high and 7.1 metres wide, while the commentary in the same database gives a frontage of 3.35 metres and a height of 5 metres. The natural reading is that 7.1 metres is the overall width and 3.35 metres the width of the passage, but the database does not explain how either was measured.
Timber from Edo Castle
What sets the gate apart is its timber from Edo Castle. The wood was dug out of the earthen platform of the Masugata enclosure at Saiwaibashi Gate, one of the castle's Thirty-six Gates, and according to the university museum it was used for the crossbeam spanning the top of the gate and the beam above it.
A plaque carved with the name Taizanso hangs on the crossbeam. It was carried out of the main house that burned in 1966, and it is said to bear the seal of Takeda Eisen (Kotoan), chief abbot of the Kenninji branch of Rinzai Zen in Higashiyama, Kyoto. The house was lost, but the plaque with the villa's name survived by moving to the gate.
Why It Is Registered
International Christian University Taizanso Front Gate was entered on the national register on October 14, 1999 as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (Building), register number 13-0062, under the criterion of being difficult to reproduce.
Timbers salvaged from a gate of Edo Castle cannot be replaced like for like. Setting a rustic thatched roof on the dignified yakuimon form is the kind of choice you would expect at a villa built for tea.
What to Look For
Standing in front of the gate, look up first at the crossbeam and the beam above it: that is where the Saiwaibashi Gate timber is. The Taizanso plaque hangs on the crossbeam.
The thatch is thick, and the roof looks large for the size of the gate. At 5 metres high with a 3.35-metre frontage, it is modest next to a castle gate or temple gate, scaled to suit the entrance of a villa in the woods.
Step through and the garage comes into view to the right, a little way back. The gate and garage sit close together, which gives a sense of how the villa's entrance was arranged.
Visiting the Front Gate
International Christian University Taizanso Front Gate is the way into Taizanso, but outside the special open days no one may pass through it into the grounds. During the 2026 opening, the exterior can be viewed freely without booking from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
