What Is International Christian University Taizanso Waiting Room?
International Christian University Taizanso Waiting Room (国際基督教大学泰山荘待合, the Taizansō machiai) is a thatched tea building on the International Christian University campus in Osawa, Mitaka, Tokyo, said to have been built in the late Edo period (1830–1867) and moved here around 1936, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1999.
A machiai is where guests gather before a tea gathering, straightening their clothes and waiting to be called in. At Taizanso the main tea room was Kofukyo, down the bluff, and this building served as its waiting room. It stands on its own at the western edge of the grounds.
It is a single-storey timber building with a thatched Yosemune-zukuri hipped roof and a footprint of 43 square metres. The Agency for Cultural Affairs lists a four-and-a-half-mat tea room, a four-and-a-half-mat room, a three-mat preparation room (Mizuya) and an earth-floored area (Doma) of about seven and a half mats. The university museum describes it as having a tea room, an anteroom, a preparation room, a reception space, an earthen floor and an entrance. From outside it reads as a farmhouse, even though a tea room sits inside.
The Ikeda Family's Chitei Tea Room
Tradition holds that the building is the Chitei, a tea room that stood at an Edo residence of the Ikeda family, lords of the Okayama domain. It is dated to the late Edo period, sometime between 1830 and 1867.
The sources disagree on which residence it came from. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database names the Ikeda family's main residence (kamiyashiki), while the university's Hachiro Yuasa Memorial Museum names their secondary residence (shimoyashiki) at Osaki in Edo. The discrepancy has not been resolved here. Both sources present the move as tradition rather than fact, and neither cites a contemporary record.
The move is thought to have taken place around 1936, when Taizanso was being built. A tea room believed to have stood in a daimyo's garden thus ended up welcoming guests at the villa of an early Showa businessman.
Why It Is Registered
International Christian University Taizanso Waiting Room was entered on the national register on October 14, 1999 as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (Building), register number 13-0059, under the criterion of being difficult to reproduce.
As a building, it is the oldest of the six at Taizanso. A late Edo tea room has kept its thatched roof and its floor plan through relocation.
With a tea room, anteroom, preparation room and earthen floor under one roof, it could host tea by itself, yet at Taizanso it was paired with Kofukyo and took the supporting role. Because both the main tea room and its waiting room survive, you can still trace across the site the route a guest once took from one to the other.
What to Look For
The Waiting Room sits at the far western edge of the site. Its big thatched hipped roof and low eaves give it the look of a farmhouse, and setting it beside the tiled Shoin makes the gap in material and formality plain.
Look for the earthen floor and front entrance, unusual features in a building that also holds a tea room. The earthen area of about seven and a half mats was likely where guests changed footwear and got ready. On the day of a gathering they were led from here down to Kofukyo, and checking where the two buildings stand as you walk the grounds makes that path easy to picture.
Visiting the Waiting Room
The interior of International Christian University Taizanso Waiting Room is not open to the public. The exterior can be seen on the university's special open days; during the 2026 opening, it can be viewed freely without booking from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. On other days the grounds are closed, so the building cannot be seen even from outside.
The reserved guided tour on the open days also stops here, but photography is banned during the tour. The official notice does not say whether photos are allowed during free viewing, so follow the instructions given on site.
