A Townhouse Moved to the Countryside

The Iida Family Residence Main House (Shikano) (飯田家住宅主屋) is a large house of the late Meiji period (1898 to 1912) in Shikanocho, Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on June 24, 2021 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a two-storey timber house with a tiled roof and a building area of 216 square metres, moved and enlarged in the late Taisho period and altered in 1970 and 1980; registration number 31-0271.

A Town House Moved to a Farming Village

The Iida Family Residence Main House was moved from the old castle town of Shikano to the farming area of the former town of Shikano (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a two-storey gabled house with a tiled roof, ringed on all sides by lean-tos.

The front lean-to carries its eaves on bent brackets, and a large lift-up door survives, so the house still shows its townhouse origins (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Inside, an earth-floored area lies to the south, with nine rooms in three rows to the north and a reception room with an alcove at the northwest.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape, as a large house that has become part of the rural scenery.

What to Look For
