A Three-Storey Wing Joined to the Main Building

The Ryokan Ohashi Annex (旅館大橋離れ, Ryokan Ōhashi Hanare) is a three-storey wooden guest-room wing of 1932 at Ryokan Ohashi in Misasa Onsen, Misasa-cho, Tottori Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on September 3, 1997, together with the Main Building. With a building area of 312 square meters, it is second in size only to the Main Building (625 square meters).

Hanare usually means a detached building, but this one is not detached. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the Annex as attached on the left of the Main Building, and its description of the Banquet Hall Building places that block between the two. Along the inn's riverside row, the Annex lies beyond the Banquet Hall Building at the upstream end.

Two Blocks Used as One

What defines the Ryokan Ohashi Annex is that it is made of two blocks with different roofs and heights. One is a three-storey block under an Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable roof; the other is a two-storey block under a Yosemune-zukuri hipped roof. The agency notes that the two are used as a single building. Both are roofed in tile.

From outside you see a tall block showing the triangular gable of its hip-and-gable roof, beside a lower block whose roof slopes away on all four sides. Inside, it works as one continuous run of guest rooms, which the agency describes as a little roomier than those in the Main Building and just as carefully and tastefully finished.

Why It Was Registered: The Riverside Face

The Ryokan Ohashi Annex carries registration number 31-0019 and was listed under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country. It belongs to the first round of registrations at the inn: it was listed with the Main Building (31-0018) on September 3, 1997, while the Banquet Hall Building, West Annex and Taiko Bridge followed on November 5.

The agency calls the Annex, spread out along the Mitoku River, an emblem of Misasa Onsen. The three-storey block turns its long face to the river and the two-storey block carries on from it. Viewed from the riverside, the point where the hip-and-gable roof gives way to the hipped roof marks the seam between the two blocks.

Visiting the Ryokan Ohashi Annex

The Ryokan Ohashi Annex is a guest-room wing, so the only way to see inside is to stay in one of its rooms. The inn's published information does not say which rooms are in the Annex, so if you want to sleep there, ask when you book. The building is three storeys of wood with no elevator; the upper floors are reached by stairs.

You may take photos in your own room, but in corridors and shared spaces the inn asks that other guests and staff stay out of the frame. Directions and day-bathing details for the whole inn are on the Ryokan Ohashi page.
