A roof over the well
The well canopy is the small roofed structure built over the estate's well. Modest as it is, it protected the household's water source, the point on which both daily life and farm work depended, from rain, snow and falling debris.
It stands on the working north side of the main house, among the practical buildings that include the work yard and, historically, the rice store. Water drawn here served cooking, washing and the labour of a large agricultural household.
The infrastructure of daily life
The Uchiyama held their land at Miyao for around four and a half centuries and served the Toyama domain as senior village officers. A house of this size ran on a quiet infrastructure of wells, stores and work spaces, and the well canopy is a rare survival of that everyday equipment.
Registered nationally in 1998 as part of the estate group, the canopy is valued less for grandeur than for the completeness it lends to a preserved domain-era farming compound.
Seeing it today
On the north side of the main house, the well canopy sits among the buildings that kept the estate running. It is easy to overlook, yet it speaks directly to how a large household met its most basic need, clean water close at hand.
The grounds were restored between 2005 and 2011. Taking in the well, the work yard and the storehouse together gives a fuller sense of the estate than the formal rooms alone.
