The working side of the estate
The north gate opens onto the practical side of the Uchiyama estate. It is on the north of the main house that the working structures cluster, among them the work yard, the well and, historically, the rice store, so a gate here served the daily labour of a large farming household rather than its formal reception.
This division of entrances is itself informative. Where the front gate announced status, the north gate belonged to the rhythm of farm work, the movement of hands, tools and harvest.
One gate in a graded system
The Uchiyama held land at Miyao for around four and a half centuries and served the Toyama domain as tomura, senior village officers. Their estate survives with a full set of gates, each keyed to a different approach, an arrangement that a single preserved building could never convey.
The north gate was listed on the national register of tangible cultural properties in 1998 as part of the estate group, valued not on its own account but as one element of a rare, complete domain-era farming compound.
Seeing it today
Reading the estate through its gates gives a visit shape. Standing at the north gate, you can picture the flow of everyday work toward the yard, the well and the storehouse, in contrast to the ceremonial route through the front gate.
The grounds were restored between 2005 and 2011. The garden's plum grove lies toward the east, so a full circuit takes in the working north side and the ornamental east side alike.
