The front gate is the first thing a visitor meets, and at the Uchiyama estate it sets the tone. A heavy, substantial gate structure is one of the defining features of the residence, announcing the standing of a household ranked among the great landowners of old Etchu.
For a family that served as tomura, a senior village officer under the Toyama domain, the gate was more than an entrance. It marked the threshold between the public road and a working estate that reached hundreds of years back at Miyao.
A gate that fits the house
The Uchiyama estate is a rare survival: a domain-era farming household preserved with its outbuildings intact rather than reduced to a single hall. The front gate belongs to this ensemble, registered together with the main house and the other structures on the national list in 1998.

Seeing it today
Passing through the front gate begins the visit, and the walk from here to the ticket point and main house crosses a generous stretch of the grounds. The gate frames a first view of the tiled main house beyond, so it is worth a pause before going in.
The whole estate was restored between 2005 and 2011, and the gate shares in that return toward its original appearance. In spring the approach is set off by the estate's cherries and, further in, its plum grove.
