What Is the Sano Family Residence?

The Sano Family Residence (佐野家住宅, Sano-ke Jūtaku) is a merchant's compound in Onmadashi-machi, Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, rebuilt immediately after the Takaoka fire of 1900, and seven of its structures are listed as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties: the main house, a tea house, four storehouses and a brick firewall. The main house was registered on December 12, 1997, and the other six on April 21, 1998.

From the street you see a large Dozo-zukuri townhouse, its upper storey finished in black plaster and its openings closed by copper-clad shutters. Behind it lie a courtyard garden and a small tea house, and behind those, four storehouses stand shoulder to shoulder across the back of the lot. Along the southern boundary runs a brick wall 25 meters long. Nearly every element of the Sano Family Residence answers the same question: how to keep fire out.

Onmadashi-machi is one of the ten neighborhoods that own the floats of the Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival, and the Sano Family Residence is a short walk from Yamachosuji, the street of fireproof merchant houses that grew out of the same rebuilding.

The Fire of 1900 and the Rebuilding

In June 1900 a fire destroyed about 60 percent of Takaoka, including much of the merchant quarter along the old Hokurikudo highway. Under building regulations issued the year before, the district was rebuilt with dozo-zukuri houses, whose outer walls are wrapped in thick plaster over earth so that a neighboring blaze cannot easily take hold. The Sano Family Residence belongs to this generation of buildings.

According to the Takaoka City Board of Education, writing for the Japan Heritage portal, the house was built by Sugaike Teijiro, who headed the brokers' association of the Takaoka rice exchange. The same note singles it out as the most Western-influenced of the dozo-zukuri buildings in the Yamachosuji area, with a Western-style room and sash windows set inside its heavy plastered shell. The sources consulted do not explain how the compound came to carry the Sano family name.

The Sano Family Residence is also one of the component properties of the Japan Heritage story on Takaoka's townspeople's culture under the Kaga Maeda clan.

How the Sano Family Residence Is Laid Out

Toyama Prefecture's heritage database describes the compound as a main house facing the road, a courtyard, and four storehouses built in a single row at the back. Read together, the Agency for Cultural Affairs entries place each structure as follows.

• Main house: a two-storey dozo-zukuri townhouse on the street; the firewall on its northern side is built as part of the house itself
• Tea house: a small single-storey timber building on the south side of the courtyard, behind the main house
• Storehouses No. 1 and No. 2: two near-identical storehouses at the northern end of the back row, the gap between them walled off so they read as one
• Furnishings storehouse: south of Storehouse No. 2, across a passage to the rear of the lot that can be sealed with fire doors
• Miso storehouse: the largest of the four, at the southern end, with the firewall attached to its south side
• Firewall: a free-standing brick wall enclosing the south side of the property

The agency's notes explain that the storehouses were lined up to form a firebreak across the rear. With the plastered main house at the front, the brick wall on the south and the row of storehouses at the back, the Sano Family Residence is shielded on three sides. Each building has its own page with details of its construction.

Visiting the Sano Family Residence

The Sano Family Residence is about a 15-minute walk from Takaoka Station, diagonally across from the Takaoka Post Office. It is privately owned and is not operated as a museum or open house.

The main house now holds Ahora Aquí, a reservation-only restaurant, so the only way to step inside is to book a meal. The Takaoka tourism association lists it as open Tuesday to Saturday, with course reservations required by the previous day (checked September 2026). No public opening of the storehouses or the tea house is advertised. Without a booking, what you can see is the street front of the main house and the end of the brick firewall.

Because the property is private and in use, keep photography to the exterior from the public road and do not enter the grounds. The restaurant uses part of the Takaoka Shinkin Bank's second parking lot, immediately to the left of the house as you face it, for guests arriving by car.
