What Is the Sano Family Residence Main House?
The Sano Family Residence Main House (佐野家住宅主屋, Sano-ke Jūtaku Shuoku) is a Dozo-zukuri townhouse built in 1900 in Onmadashi-machi, Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, and it was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on December 12, 1997. It is the street-facing building of a merchant compound rebuilt right after the great Takaoka fire of that year.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a two-storey dozo-zukuri building with a tiled roof and a building area of 112 square meters. It measures 7.5 ken across the front and 5 ken deep (a ken is a traditional bay of roughly 1.8 meters), which makes it a large house for a merchant street, and a Tsuchibisashi one ken deep projects over the entrance. Its registration number is 16-0016; it was listed in the 7th round, about four months before the tea house and storehouses behind it.
Why the Sano Family Residence Main House Was Registered
The Sano Family Residence Main House was registered under the criterion of serving as a model of form. The agency calls it a fine example of a large dozo-zukuri townhouse and notes that it is well preserved overall.
The agency also stresses that the whole compound was planned with fire in mind. On the north side, a firewall against the neighboring lot is built as one piece with the main house, so the front building itself acts as a shield. It is the first line of a defensive layout completed by the row of storehouses at the back and the brick wall on the south.
Writing for the Japan Heritage portal, the Takaoka City Board of Education adds that the house hides a Western-style room and sash windows behind its plastered exterior, making it the most Western-influenced of the dozo-zukuri buildings around Yamachosuji.
Highlights of the Sano Family Residence Main House
Look up at the second floor of the Sano Family Residence Main House. The posts are buried inside thick Ōkabe walls, and the entire surface is finished in black lime plaster, a slow and costly finish whose glossy black signaled a prosperous household. The openings are fitted with copper-clad fire shutters that, once closed, leave no gap for sparks.
The earthen eave at street level throws the ground floor into shade and gives the facade its depth. At the north end, the firewall rises in one piece with the house, so the roofline looks different on each side.
Toyama Prefecture's heritage database points out a contrast that only becomes visible indoors: despite the heavy dozo-zukuri shell, the rear of the ground floor facing the garden is designed to feel light and open. Closed to the street, open to the garden.
Visiting the Sano Family Residence Main House
The Sano Family Residence Main House now houses Ahora Aquí, a reservation-only restaurant, and the interior can only be seen by guests who book a meal; there is no sightseeing admission. The Takaoka tourism association lists it as open Tuesday to Saturday, with course bookings required by the previous day (checked September 2026).
Without a booking, the black plaster walls, copper shutters and earthen eave are all visible from the street. Photograph from the public road without blocking the entrance, and follow the staff's guidance about photography inside.
