What the Kora Auxiliary Shrine Is
Hirohachiman Shrine Auxiliary Kora Shrine Main Hall is a late Muromachi auxiliary sanctuary in Kaminakano, Hirokawa Town, Wakayama Prefecture, built in 1502 and designated an Important Cultural Property on 6 April 1929. It is a single-bay Kasuga-zukuri hall with corner rafters and a Hiwadabuki roof, standing to the left of the main hall, between it and the Tenjin auxiliary shrine.
The deity is Takenouchi no Sukune, the long-lived minister of the early chronicles who is said to have served Empress Jingu and Emperor Ojin. That service explains his place beside a Hachiman sanctuary. The cult belongs to the line of the Kora deity whose head shrine, Kora Taisha, stands in Kyushu.
In the row of four sanctuaries this is the second from the left. It sits a step below the main hall to its right, and its ridge line drops accordingly.
Why It Was Designated
The listing is dated 6 April 1929, register number 01640, immediately after the main hall and the Wakamiya auxiliary shrine, the three of which became Important Cultural Properties together.
The single-bay kasuga-zukuri form with corner rafters carries the case. The roof divides to left and right as seen from the front, a canopy projects forward, the roof line curves upward, and corner rafters take the eave angles. The frontage is a single bay, yet the proportioning of the timbers and the framing of the roof are those of full-scale shrine work, which is what makes the hall a benchmark for late Muromachi auxiliary architecture in Kii Province.
Six ridge tags are designated as Tsuketari and record repairs from 1502 onward. That is fewer than the eleven at Wakamiya or the eight at the main hall, but reading all three sets together is how the building sequence of the precinct has been reconstructed.
What to Look For
The Wakamiya auxiliary shrine to the right is the same size and the same type. Only the date differs, 1493 there against 1502 here. Looking at the two in succession, the thickness of the members and the handling of the curves make a shared design and a shared workshop easy to credit.
When comparing them, watch the carved member set above the beam under the front canopy. Late Muromachi work keeps its outlines plain and leaves broad flat surfaces; unlike Momoyama carving and after, the structural logic still leads and the ornament follows.
On the other side of Hirohachiman Shrine Auxiliary Kora Shrine Main Hall stands the Tenjin auxiliary shrine, built in 1652 and so about a century and a half younger. Since the type is identical, the width of one roof is all that separates a Muromachi example from an Edo one.
Visiting the Kora Auxiliary Shrine
Hirohachiman Shrine Auxiliary Kora Shrine Main Hall is closed inside and stands within the inner gate and fence, so it is viewed from outside. A position toward the left of the fence takes in Kora and Tenjin together, which is the useful angle for the Muromachi against Edo comparison.
To set it against Wakamiya instead, move to the centre of the fence, where the matching pair on either side of the main hall reads at a glance. Photography is not restricted by any notice on the official site, though it is best paused during prayers and festivals.
Access, parking and how to reach the shrine office are common to the precinct and are covered on the Hirohachiman Shrine page.
