What the Wakamiya Auxiliary Shrine Is

Hirohachiman Shrine Auxiliary Wakamiya Shrine Main Hall is a late Muromachi auxiliary sanctuary in Kaminakano, Hirokawa Town, Wakayama Prefecture, built in 1493 and designated an Important Cultural Property on 6 April 1929. It is a single-bay Kasuga-zukuri hall with corner rafters and a Hiwadabuki roof, standing to the right of the main hall as you face it.

The deity is Emperor Nintoku, known as Osazaki no Mikoto. As the son of Emperor Ojin, the Hachiman deity, he is honoured as the young prince, and placing his sanctuary immediately beside the main hall is common practice at Hachiman shrines.

This is also the earliest building at the shrine whose construction year is documented directly. Where the main hall can only be dated to about 1413 by inference, the Munafuda of Hirohachiman Shrine Auxiliary Wakamiya Shrine Main Hall names 1493 outright.

Why It Was Designated

The designation is dated 6 April 1929, register number 01639, one of three buildings listed that day alongside the main hall and the Kora auxiliary shrine.

The type is single-bay kasuga-zukuri with corner rafters. In kasuga-zukuri the roof falls to left and right as seen from the front, a canopy projects over the entrance, and the roof line curves upward; the corner rafters carry the eaves at the angles. Though the frontage is only one bay, the roof follows the full grammar of formal shrine construction rather than a simplified village version.

Eleven ridge tags are designated as Tsuketari. That is the largest set attached to any building in this precinct, and it traces the hall from its raising in 1493 through later repairs. Part of the evidence for dating the main hall to about 1413 comes from the tags of this shrine and its neighbour.

What to Look For

The Kora auxiliary shrine to the left matches this hall in size and in type. What differs is the date: 1493 here against 1502 there, nine years apart. Two nearly identical halls that close together in time are an unusual chance to see where a workshop held its habits and where it changed them. Stand in front of Hirohachiman Shrine Auxiliary Wakamiya Shrine Main Hall first, then move to Kora and take the same details in the same order.

The curve of the roof and the way the canopy meets it are the crux of kasuga-zukuri, and the corner rafter under the eave angle is best read looking up from below and to the side. The cypress bark has been relaid, so the courses are even and the cut edge of the eaves runs close to straight.

The hall sits a step lower than the main sanctuary. In the view of four roofs descending in sequence, the low one at the right-hand end is this building.

Visiting the Wakamiya Auxiliary Shrine

Hirohachiman Shrine Auxiliary Wakamiya Shrine Main Hall is not open inside. Like the main hall it stands within the inner gate and fence, and viewing is from outside. Because it occupies the right-hand end, a position toward the right of the fence gives a side view up into the roof structure, while the centre of the fence shows how it sits within the row of four.

For the comparison with Kora, the stretch of fence in front of the main hall keeps both halls within a short turn of the head. No notice on the official site restricts photography, but it is courteous to pause during rites.

Directions, parking and the shrine office contact are common to the whole precinct and appear on the Hirohachiman Shrine page.
