What the Tenjin Auxiliary Shrine Is

Hirohachiman Shrine Auxiliary Tenjin Shrine Main Hall is an early Edo auxiliary sanctuary in Kaminakano, Hirokawa Town, Wakayama Prefecture, built in 1652 and designated an Important Cultural Property on 26 February 1947. It is a single-bay Kasuga-zukuri hall with corner rafters and a Hiwadabuki roof, standing at the left end of the row of four sanctuaries.

The deity is Sugawara no Michizane, the scholar honoured across Japan as a patron of learning. A monthly rite is held for him on the 25th of each month, and the first Tenjin day of the year falls on 25 January. A separate worship hall stands in front of the sanctuary, and prayers are offered from there.

Of the six Important Cultural Properties in the precinct, this is the only sanctuary from the Edo period. Its immediate neighbour to the right, the Kora auxiliary shrine, was built in 1502, so roughly a century and a half separates two halls standing side by side.

Why It Was Designated

The listing is dated 26 February 1947, register number 01641. It came eighteen years after the main hall, Wakamiya and Kora, on the same day as the worship hall and the two-storied gate.

The type is identical to that of the Kora hall next door: single-bay kasuga-zukuri with corner rafters. That two examples of one form, one from the late Muromachi period and one from the early Edo period, survive a few metres apart is what gives Hirohachiman Shrine Auxiliary Tenjin Shrine Main Hall its documentary value. Changes in the scantling of the timbers, the curve of the roof and the treatment of carving can be read with every other variable held constant.

No Munafuda are designated as Tsuketari with this building. The date of 1652 rests on shrine tradition and on the characteristics of the fabric itself, which makes this the one sanctuary here whose period is argued mainly from style rather than from an inscribed tag.

What to Look For

The Kaerumata under the front canopy is the liveliest detail. A Chinese lion is carved on the face, and the same strut reads differently from behind, the design shifting with the angle of view. Carving that sets up two readings in one member belongs to the early Edo sensibility, when ornament had begun to move independently of structure.

Another strut here combines pine, bamboo and plum. Where the Muromachi work at Kora and Wakamiya keeps to arabesques and simple geometry in plain outline, the subjects at Hirohachiman Shrine Auxiliary Tenjin Shrine Main Hall are specific and the relief is deeper. Walking back and forth between the two halls makes the century and a half visible in the choice of motif alone.

The cypress-bark roof was renewed in the restoration campaign known as the Heisei rebuilding, and the vermilion is as fresh here as on the main hall and the gate.

Visiting the Tenjin Auxiliary Shrine

The interior of Hirohachiman Shrine Auxiliary Tenjin Shrine Main Hall is closed. The building stands within the inner gate and fence, and viewing is from outside. Because it occupies the left-hand end, a spot toward the left of the fence brings both the front and one flank into view and gives a workable angle up into the carving under the canopy.

Seeing both faces of that strut would mean walking around the building, which the fence does not allow. The practical approach is to study the lion on the front and then compare it with the Muromachi carving at Kora. Nothing on the official site restricts photography.

The route to the precinct, the car parks and the shrine office contact are shared by all six buildings and are given on the Hirohachiman Shrine page.
