A Mountain Shrine Hall of 1608
The Kinbo Shrine Main Hall (金峯神社本殿, Kinbō Jinja honden) is a shrine hall built in 1608 near the summit of Mt. Kinbo in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, and was designated an Important Cultural Property on November 14, 2001 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The name is read Kinbo, not Kinpu.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a hall 1 bay wide at the front and 3 at the back, 2 bays deep, single-storey with a surrounding pent roof (mokoshi), under a hip-and-gable copper roof, designated together with 6 ridge tags; designation number 02399, owned by Kinbo Shrine.
A Mountain of Shugendo
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Mt. Kinbo rises at the southern edge of the Shonai Plain and has long been revered as a sacred mountain. The Tsuruoka Tourism Bureau notes that the 471-metre peak has a history of Kinbo Shugendo mountain worship and was once closed to women.
According to Kinbo Shrine, the main hall was formerly the hall of Zao Gongen; tradition places its founding in the early 9th century and a rebuilding by Fujiwara no Hidehira in 1150. The Agency for Cultural Affairs concludes from ridge tags and documents that the present hall was built in 1608 by remodelling an earlier building, with the warlord Mogami Yoshiaki as chief patron.
The Sakai lords of Shonai repaired it over the generations, and the whole roof was re-covered in 2021 (Kinbo Shrine).
Why It Was Designated
The Kinbo Shrine Main Hall was designated an Important Cultural Property in 2001. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes an unusual design: it is based on the form of a Zen-style Buddhist hall, with a pent roof and closely set bracket sets, yet its core has the plan of a shrine main hall.
The front of the pent roof, finished with a cusped karahafu gable, has no known parallel, giving the hall high design value as early Edo-period architecture. The Agency also rates it as one of the few surviving Shugendo buildings in the Tohoku region.
What to Look For
The core of the hall is 1 bay wide at the front and 3 at the back, 2 bays deep, under a hip-and-gable roof, with a pent roof running all around (Agency for Cultural Affairs). From the front, look at the pent roof's unusual karahafu gable.
The summit looks out over the Shonai Plain to Mt. Gassan and Mt. Chokai, and Mt. Kinbo is a national Place of Scenic Beauty (Tsuruoka Tourism Bureau). On the way up are a guardian gate of 1751 and, halfway up, the worship hall of the Naka-no-miya, formerly a Nyoirin Kannon hall (Kinbo Shrine).
Visiting
According to Kinbo Shrine, the shrine office receives visitors and prayers from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from April 1 to October 31 and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from November 1 to March 31. Cars can drive up to the Naka-no-miya halfway up the mountain, where there are 2 car parks.
The Tsuruoka Tourism Bureau says the Naka-no-miya is about 15 minutes by car from the foot of the mountain. The main hall is near the summit, so continue on foot from there. The address is 1 Kinbo, Seiryuji, Tsuruoka City; enquiries go to the shrine office (0235-23-7863).
