The Uzen Kenren Co., Ltd. Inspection Building (羽前絹練株式会社検査棟, Kensa-tō) is the inspection shed of a working silk scouring works in Shinkaicho, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, where finished cloth was checked by eye and divided for shipping; it was built around 1943 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 3 December 2024. It is a single-storey timber building of 357 square meters.
The Uzen Kenren Co., Ltd. Inspection Building stands at the southern edge of the site. It is the youngest of the seven registered buildings, and the only one with a separate lot number, 21-3; the others are listed at 21-5.
North Windows and Daylight
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Uzen Kenren Co., Ltd. Inspection Building once had windows opened along its north side so that cloth could be inspected by natural light. North light carries no direct sun and changes little through the day, which is why workshops that judge colour and flaws have long favoured it.
Inside is a single room with a boarded floor and, according to Tsuruoka City, a finished ceiling. Unlike the earth-floored sheds where machines stand, this is a room for laying cloth out and looking at it. The agency's wording, that inspection was done this way in the past, suggests the north-light method is no longer used.
A Plain Building from the War Years
The Uzen Kenren Co., Ltd. Inspection Building has a simple gabled roof (Kirizuma-zukuri) in pantiles (Sangawara-buki) and weatherboarded walls (Shitami-itabari). There is no ridge vent and no ornament.
The agency registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape, noting that despite its plainness it conveys how scouring was organised before the end of the war and defines the southern edge of the site. After the boiling, dyeing and finishing, the last step took place here, in the hands and eyes of inspectors.
