Ima Hachiman Shrine, guardian shrine of Yamaguchi

Ima Hachiman Shrine (今八幡宮, Ima Hachimangū) is a Shinto shrine in Yawatanobaba, Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, whose main hall, worship hall and two-storey gate, traditionally rebuilt by Ōuchi Yoshioki in 1503, were designated together as an Important Cultural Property in 1907.

The shrine calls itself the guardian shrine of the whole town of Yamaguchi. Its principal deity is Emperor Ōjin, worshipped as Hachiman, alongside Emperor Chūai, Empress Jingū, Tamayorihime and Prince Uji. The prefecture's tourism site places it on a low hill just south of Noda Shrine.

Nobody knows when Ima Hachiman Shrine was founded. According to the shrine, a daughter of Ōuchi Hironari was known as "Lady Ima Hachiman" in the Kōan era (1278 to 1288), so the shrine already existed by then. It was here before the Ōuchi clan moved its seat to Yamaguchi.

From Ōuchi guardian shrine to three protected buildings

Yamaguchi Prefecture's heritage notes record a tradition that in 1471 Ōuchi Masahiro moved the Asakura Hachiman Shrine from Shimo-Unorei and enshrined it here alongside the original Ima Hachiman. Another account puts that merger in 1503. The shrine says Masahiro made Ima Hachiman Shrine the official guardian of Yamaguchi at the time.

The present buildings are credited to Ōuchi Yoshioki, 30th head of the clan, in 1503. The dating is not quite uniform across sources. The Agency for Cultural Affairs lists all three simply as late Muromachi, while the prefecture, judging by their workmanship, dates them to around the end of the 15th century.

On May 27, 1907, the three buildings were placed under the Special Protection Building scheme by Home Ministry Notice No. 63, and they are now Important Cultural Properties. On February 3, 1979, three miniature inner sanctuaries (kūden) and two ridge tablets were added to the main hall's listing as Tsuketari attached items; the gate's listing includes one votive picture. The shrine records a full dismantling repair in 1914 and new roof shingles in 1954 and again in 1991.

How the Ima Hachiman Shrine buildings line up

At the top of the front steps stands the gate, with the worship hall behind it and the main hall behind that. All three sit on one axis. The worship hall is attached to the gate in front and, at the back, joins the Kōhai porch of the main hall through a short roofed link. The prefecture reads this chain of connected buildings as an early forerunner of the Gongen-zukuri plan that spread after the 17th century. Every roof is covered in Kokerabuki wood shingles.

The gate has floored wings on either side, and ordinary worshippers pray from inside it, a type known locally as a rōhaiden, a gate that doubles as a worship hall. The prefecture suggests that the many Hachiman shrines around Yamaguchi built this way were following the Ima Hachiman Shrine model. The shrine itself explains the plan as a practical answer to a site with little level ground.

Each building has its own page. At the main hall, look for the carved Kaerumata brackets; at the worship hall, the way it links gate and sanctuary; at the gate, the floored wings and the latticed windows of the upper storey.

Visiting Ima Hachiman Shrine

The grounds of Ima Hachiman Shrine are open for worship and free to enter. According to the shrine, visitors may step up into the gate as long as they take their shoes off, and votive pictures offered in the Edo period hang inside. The worship hall is used for prayer ceremonies, but other visitors can ask to be shown in. The main hall is closed to the public. Groups that would like an explanation from the shrine should book ahead.

The nearest station is Kami-Yamaguchi on the JR Yamaguchi Line, about 10 minutes away on foot. From JR Shin-Yamaguchi Station, a bus takes about 30 minutes to the Jieitai-mae stop, which is a 1-minute walk from the shrine. By car, the shrine is about 15 minutes from the Yamaguchi interchange of the Chūgoku Expressway, and there is room for about 10 cars at the top of the back approach road. The shrine office is about 100 meters to the left after you come down the front steps; telephone 083-922-0083.

The spring festival is on April 15 and the annual festival on October 6. In recent autumns the shrine has been lit up after dark; in 2025 the illumination ran from October 17 to November 24, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., free of charge. Check each year whether it is held and when.

Addresses differ between sources. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives Yawatanobaba, Yamaguchi City; Yamaguchi City gives 828 Kami-Unorei; and the shrine gives 22 Yawatanobaba.
