What the Ima Hachiman Shrine Tower Gate is
The Ima Hachiman Shrine Tower Gate (今八幡宮楼門, Ima Hachimangū Rōmon) is the late Muromachi two-storey gate of Ima Hachiman Shrine in Yawatanobaba, Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, traditionally part of the rebuilding of 1503 and designated an Important Cultural Property in 1907 together with the main hall and the worship hall.
It is a Rōmon with a single bay and a single doorway, an Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable roof over the upper storey, a Kōhai porch at the front and a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri wing on each side. All the roofs are Kokerabuki wood shingles, and the whole stands on a stone platform. It is the front building of the shrine, with the worship hall attached directly behind it.
For all its gate form, it is not a passage. Both wings have raised wooden floors, and worshippers step up into it to pray. In Yamaguchi this kind of building is called a rōhaiden, a tower gate that doubles as a worship hall.
How the Ima Hachiman Shrine Tower Gate is built
Yamaguchi Prefecture gives the overall width, porch and wings included, as 14.09 meters, with a depth of 3.91 meters. Each wing is a single storey two bays by two bays; the prefectural register measures one wing at 5.09 by 3.91 meters. The upper storey is three bays by two, ringed by a veranda with a railing capped by onion-shaped finials.
The lower storey stands on round pillars set on wooden plinths, with three-block bracket sets; the upper storey uses projecting one-step brackets. The porch pillars are round and taper at top and bottom, and an uncarved frog-leg strut sits at the center of the porch beam. The shrine points to the plinths among the details that show the influence of Zenshūyō, the Zen temple style.
The lower storey is open on all four sides. Upstairs, the front and back each have a central door flanked by Renji-mado slatted windows, with openwork carvings of the wheel-shaped rinbō emblem set behind the slats. The windows on the two sides carry the Ōuchi-bishi, the diamond crest of the Ōuchi clan that paid for the buildings.
Why the Ima Hachiman Shrine Tower Gate is protected
The Ima Hachiman Shrine Tower Gate matters because a gate here does the work of a worship hall. Yamaguchi Prefecture explains that with both wings floored, nobody can walk through in outdoor shoes, and so the gate has served as the place where ordinary worshippers pray.
Shrines built this way are common around Yamaguchi City, especially among Hachiman shrines, and the prefecture suggests they were following the Ima Hachiman Shrine model. Yamaguchi City likewise names the gate's role as a worship hall as its defining feature.
The Ima Hachiman Shrine Tower Gate was placed under the Special Protection Building scheme by Home Ministry Notice No. 63 on May 27, 1907, and is now an Important Cultural Property. Its listing includes one votive picture as a Tsuketari attached item. The prefecture describes its workmanship as robust and its decoration as refined, like that of the main hall and worship hall.
Seeing the Ima Hachiman Shrine Tower Gate
According to the shrine, anyone may step up into the Ima Hachiman Shrine Tower Gate after removing their shoes. Votive pictures offered in the Edo period hang inside. This is where ordinary worshippers always prayed; the worship hall beyond was reserved for heads of the Ōuchi clan and, later, envoys of the domain lord.
Once inside, notice the floor levels. The shrine says the wing floors sit a step lower than the center, giving retainers who attended the lord places matched to their rank, and room for monks reciting sutras.
The Ōuchi crests on the upper side walls are hard to make out from directly below. Step back and look up at an angle and they become easier to spot. The rinbō carvings on the front and back are in the windows on either side of each door. Check notices on site or ask at the shrine office about photography. Directions and visiting conditions for the shrine as a whole are on the Ima Hachiman Shrine page.

- Not in the usual way. Both wings have raised wooden floors, and the gate itself serves as the place where worshippers pray, in effect the shrine's worship hall.
- Can I go inside the Ima Hachiman Shrine Tower Gate?
- Yes. The shrine says visitors may step up into it freely after removing their shoes. Votive pictures from the Edo period hang inside.
- What is a rōhaiden, as seen at the Ima Hachiman Shrine Tower Gate?

- When was the Ima Hachiman Shrine Tower Gate built?
