Mutsumi Village Office

The Mutsumi Village Office (むつみ村役場) in Kibekami, Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is the office of the former village of Mutsumi, whose office building of 1895 and storehouse of 1896 were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on June 12, 1997 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Both are owned by Hagi City.

The Agency notes that the office is still loved as a surviving Meiji village office, and that the storehouse, which keeps its original form together with it, has become a symbol of the village.

The Two Buildings

The office is a two-storey hipped timber building entered from the gable end, with a hip-and-gable porch; inside, a central passage cuts into the board-floored office at the back (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The storehouse, behind the office, is a two-storey gable-fronted store built after the office was finished. Both are roofed with Sekishu tiles, so the office and its store of a Meiji village survive as a pair (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each building is described on its own page.
