An Arched Bridge of 1937 in the Shrine Grounds
The Nagao Hachiman Shrine Miyuki Bridge (長尾八幡宮御幸橋, Nagao Hachimangū Miyukibashi) is an arched bridge built in 1937 over the pond in the middle of the grounds of Nagao Hachiman Shrine in Suo-Oshima Town, Oshima District, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on December 3, 2024 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a bridge of reinforced concrete and stone, 4.3 metres long and 4.3 metres wide, with abutments; registration number 35-0131, owned by the religious corporation Nagao Hachiman Shrine.
Why It Was Registered
The Miyuki Bridge was registered as a structure contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs explains that it was built as part of the construction of a fire-fighting reservoir and, as an arched bridge, tells the history of how the grounds were developed.
Yamaguchi Prefecture likewise values it as a key to understanding how the grounds changed.
What to Look For
Stone parapets are set on both edges of a gently arched reinforced-concrete deck, and stone panels carved with a quince-flower motif fill the openings of the parapets (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
At 4.3 metres both long and wide, it is a short, broad bridge (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The pond beneath was laid out as a fire-fighting reservoir (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
