A Worship Hall with a Carved Porch
The Nagao Hachiman Shrine Worship Hall (長尾八幡宮拝殿, Nagao Hachimangū haiden) is the worship hall of 1916 east of the main hall of Nagao Hachiman Shrine in Suo-Oshima Town, Oshima District, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on December 3, 2024 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey timber building with a copper roof and a building area of 94 square metres; registration number 35-0126, owned by the religious corporation Nagao Hachiman Shrine.
Why It Was Registered
The Worship Hall was registered as a structure that has become a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes a showy worship hall whose porch is packed with openwork and fully carved figures.
According to Yamaguchi Prefecture, it was built in the rebuilding of 1916, with Choshu carpenters taking part.
What to Look For
The hall faces east on a platform under a hip-and-gable copper roof entered from the long side, with a triangular gable on the front, a porch with a cusped karahafu gable and a railed veranda on three sides. The bracket sets project one step, and the eaves have two layers of closely spaced rafters (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Inside is a single tatami room with a coffered ceiling (Agency for Cultural Affairs). From the front, look at the carvings concentrated on the karahafu porch.
