A Carved Main Hall of 1916
The Nagao Hachiman Shrine Main Hall (長尾八幡宮本殿, Nagao Hachimangū honden) is the main hall of Nagao Hachiman Shrine, halfway up the mountain 神南山 in Suo-Oshima Town, Oshima District, Yamaguchi Prefecture, built in 1916 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on December 3, 2024 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey timber building with a cypress-bark roof and a building area of 35 square metres; registration number 35-0124, owned by the religious corporation Nagao Hachiman Shrine.
Why It Was Registered
The Nagao Hachiman Shrine Main Hall was registered as a structure that has become a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes a main hall by local carpenters, with lively eaves decorated with outstanding carvings.
According to Yamaguchi Prefecture, it was rebuilt in 1916 when the old hall had decayed, and Choshu carpenters, known for going from Suo-Oshima to work in Shikoku, took part in the work.
What to Look For
The hall stands on a platform facing east. It is a three-bay nagare-style hall with a cypress-bark roof, a decorative triangular gable on the front and a gabled entrance canopy. The bracket sets project three steps with tail rafters, a row of bearing blocks sits on the continuous tie beams, and the gable is framed with double tie beams and a central strut (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Yamaguchi Prefecture notes that carvings by local carpenters adorn the eaves and the side screens. Look up at the layered three-step brackets under the eaves and the carved side screens.
