About the Nakano Family Residence (Heki, Nagato)

The Nakano Family Residence (Heki, Nagato) is a kimono merchant's compound in Shimoichi, Heki-kami, Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, whose eight buildings and structures, dating from the late Edo period to the late Taisho era, were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on March 6, 2024.

The compound stands in the middle of Furuichi (古市), a market street that grew up along the Akamagaseki Kaido, an old road running west toward Shimonoseki. Yamaguchi Prefecture notes that the Nakano family traded in kimono fabrics here from the Edo period onward; the shop later sold Western clothing, and the display shelves from that period still line the gallery around the shop's open well.

The oldest building is the grain storehouse, dated to the late Edo period, a window from 1751 to 1830. According to the prefecture, it is said to have come through a great fire that struck the Nakano property in the Edo period. The shop and main house, the inner storehouse and the rice storehouse are mid-Meiji; a wooden tag inscribed in ink on the upper floor of the clothing storehouse dates it to 1891. The annex, the tea house and the gate and wall are late Taisho, and the Western-style lookout tower on the annex is thought to have been added around 1929.

Layout of the Compound

The shop and main house faces south onto the old road, its long frontage setting the tone of the street. Behind it the property runs north. The inner storehouse is attached directly to the north side of the house by a corridor; the grain storehouse stands to the northwest, and beyond it, along the western edge, the rice storehouse and the clothing storehouse stand in a row.

North of the house and storehouses is the annex, a suite of reception rooms for important guests. A three-storey Western-style lookout rises at its northwest corner, and a four-and-a-half-mat tea house sits at its northeast corner, facing the garden. Along the east side, a stone-based wall and a single-bay Yakuimon gate enclose the compound from a side lane.

From outside, start on the old road with the shop front, then walk round into the lane on the east for the gate and wall. The lookout tower pokes above the roofs and can be picked out from several streets away; the prefecture describes it as a local landmark.

Visiting and Getting There

The Nakano Family Residence (Heki, Nagato) is privately owned and is not open on a regular basis; as of September 2026 we found no announcement of scheduled openings. Nagato City reported that in October 2018, during a local street event, the "former Nakano main shop" and "former Nakano villa" were opened to visitors, who toured the garden with its tea house and the Taisho-era Western-style building; the city also noted that the villa had served as a location for the film Misuzu. Openings of this kind are tied to events, so check with Nagato City or local organisers before planning a visit around one.

On other days, view the buildings from the road and the side lane only, and do not step through the gate. Photograph from public ground, keeping windows and residents out of frame.

The nearest station is Nagato-Furuichi on the JR San'in Line. The compound lies about 260 metres southwest of the station in a straight line, a few minutes on foot. There is no visitor parking.

The tea house was registered as a model of design; the other seven were registered for their contribution to the historic landscape. Together they preserve an unusually complete country merchant's property: a shop on the road, a row of storehouses for stock and household goods, and an annex and tea house for entertaining.
