What the Nakano Family Residence Annex Is
The Nakano Family Residence Annex (中野家住宅離れ, Nakano-ke Jūtaku Hanare) is a late Taisho-era guest wing in Shimoichi, Heki-kami, Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 6, 2024.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to the late Taisho era, 1919 to 1926, with an addition around 1929. It is a single-storey timber building with a three-storey section and a tiled roof, covering 171 square metres.
It stands north of the main house and storehouses: a single-storey reception wing under a Sangawara-buki pantile roof, with a Kirizuma-zukuri gabled entrance porch on the south and a three-storey Western-style lookout tower at the northwest corner.
Why It Was Registered
It was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency calls the lookout a local landmark, and Yamaguchi Prefecture treats it as an essential part of the Furuichi townscape.
According to the prefecture, the tower is thought to have been added around 1929 to accommodate a visit by a member of the imperial family. Its walls are clad in Shitami-itabari clapboard, and the lattice windows are topped with pediments. Putting a Western tower on the corner of a Japanese reception wing was a statement about how seriously a country merchant family took an important guest in the early Showa years.
The interior of the Nakano Family Residence Annex is just as considered. Four Zashiki reception rooms are ringed by corridors, and the dressing room on the ground floor of the tower has a Saobuchi-tenjō batten ceiling laid out in a fan. The prefecture also records woven wicker-and-reed ceilings, painted wooden doors, nekoma shoji with sliding inner panels, carved Ranma transoms and painted sliding doors.
What to Look For
From outside, the lookout is what you will see first: a white clapboard tower rising above the tile roofs of the compound, visible from the streets of Furuichi.
Inside, the fan-shaped ceiling of the dressing room is the showpiece; the Agency singles it out as an elaborate design, and the national database includes a photograph of the room's nekoma shoji.
The gabled porch on the south side was the formal entrance for guests, separate from the family's way into the main house, a sign of the wing's status.
Visiting
The Nakano Family Residence Annex stands at the back of a privately owned compound and is not open on a regular basis; as of September 2026 no scheduled openings had been announced. Nagato City reported that the "former Nakano villa" was opened during a local event in October 2018, with visitors touring its Taisho-era Western-style building.
