What the Nakano Family Residence Shop and Main House Is
The Nakano Family Residence Shop and Main House (中野家住宅店舗兼主屋, Nakano-ke Jūtaku Tenpo-ken-omoya) is a mid-Meiji kimono merchant's shop and residence in Shimoichi, Heki-kami, Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 6, 2024.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to the mid-Meiji period, 1883 to 1897, with alterations around 1947 and in 1993. It is a two-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 244 square metres, the largest of the eight registered buildings in the compound.
It stands in the Furuichi district on the old Akamagaseki Kaido, facing south onto the road. It is a Machiya, a townhouse that holds both shop and living quarters, and it is the front door to the storehouses and annex behind it.
Why It Was Registered
The Nakano Family Residence Shop and Main House was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency points to its very long street frontage and calls it the core of the historic townscape along the road.
The roof is a Kirizuma-zukuri gable of Sangawara-buki pantiles, laid Hirairi with the ridge parallel to the street, so a long eave line runs along the road; the walls are finished in white Shikkui lime plaster.
Inside, the northern half is raised living space and the southern half a broad earth-floored shop. Above the shop floor the building opens into a double-height well, ringed by a gallery lined with the display shelves of the Western clothing shop the business later became. The shift from kimono cloth to Western clothes happened inside the same walls, and you can still see it in the fittings.
What to Look For
From the road, take in the length of the frontage: two storeys of white plaster and tile stretching along the street at the centre of old Furuichi.
The interior highlight is the open well above the shop and the gallery around it; the national database includes a photograph of the upstairs clothing shelves. Walking the gallery and looking down into the shop gives a clear sense of how a country draper's sales floor worked.
Directly behind, the inner storehouse is joined to the Nakano Family Residence Shop and Main House by a corridor, so stock could move straight from store to shop.
Visiting
The Nakano Family Residence Shop and Main House is privately owned and the interior is not open on a regular basis; as of September 2026 no scheduled openings had been announced. Nagato City reported that the "former Nakano main shop" was opened to visitors during a local event in October 2018.
