The First Shrine of Nagato Province

Sumiyoshi Shrine (住吉神社), the Nagato Ichinomiya or first-ranked shrine of the old province of Nagato, stands in Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture; its main hall, built in 1370 by Ouchi Hiroyo, is a National Treasure, its worship hall of 1539 is an Important Cultural Property, and its Meiji-era tower gate and karamon gate with openwork fence became Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2017.

According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the shrine is said to have been founded by Empress Jingu and later came to be known as the first shrine of Nagato. Yamaguchi Prefecture's tourism site counts it, with Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka and Sumiyoshi Shrine in Hakata, among the three great Sumiyoshi shrines of Japan.

How the Precinct Is Laid Out

The tower gate stands at the front of the precinct at the top of the stone steps. Behind it is the worship hall, and behind that the main hall. Yamaguchi Prefecture's heritage notes place the tower gate on the south side of the main hall and worship hall. Between the worship hall and the main hall stands the karamon gate, with the openwork fence running out from either side to enclose the main hall.

The four buildings span five centuries. The main hall, a nine-bay nagare-style sanctuary of 1370, was first protected in 1903 under the old Ancient Shrines and Temples Preservation Law and made a National Treasure in 1953. The worship hall dates from 1539 and became an Important Cultural Property in 1954; Yamaguchi Prefecture's tourism site and Shimonoseki City's guidebook both attribute it to a donation by the warlord Mori Motonari. The tower gate was built in 1901, the karamon gate around 1901, and the openwork fence was added during repairs to the main hall in 1909. The tower gate and the gate-and-fence were registered together on October 27, 2017.

Yamaguchi Prefecture records that a tower gate donated by Ouchi Hiroyo in the Muromachi period once stood here but was pulled down in 1870, and that the present gate was built as its revival. That history explains the arrangement visitors see today: a medieval main hall and worship hall framed front and back by Meiji gates and fencing.

Beyond its buildings, the shrine holds Important Cultural Properties such as a bronze bell and a gilt-bronze saddle ornament with openwork peony scrolls, kept and shown in its treasure hall, according to the prefectural tourism site.

Visiting and Getting There

The precinct is open for worship. The treasure hall is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with admission of ¥300 for adults and ¥150 for children, and it closes over the New Year, on the third Sunday of May, on September 23 and from December 8 to 15, according to Yamaguchi Prefecture's tourism site. The December closure coincides with the shrine's own rites, so check with the shrine (083-256-2656) before visiting then.

Sumiyoshi Shrine is about 5 minutes by bus from JR Shin-Shimonoseki Station; get off at Ichinomiya and walk 5 minutes. By car it is about 10 minutes from the Shimonoseki interchange on the Chugoku Expressway. The Yamaguchi Prefectural Tourism Federation notes that parking is available, but not for large buses.

During the Yamaguchi Destination Campaign from October to December 2026, a special viewing lets visitors approach the main hall from the normally closed enclosure with a priest as guide. Details are on the main hall's page.
