A Late Muromachi Worship Hall
The Sumiyoshi Shrine Worship Hall (住吉神社拝殿, Sumiyoshi-jinja haiden) is the worship hall of Nagato Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi Shrine in Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, built in 1539 and designated an Important Cultural Property on September 17, 1954. Yamaguchi Prefecture's tourism site and Shimonoseki City's guidebook both record it as a donation from the warlord Mori Motonari.
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, it measures three bays by one bay, a single storey with a gabled roof whose gable end faces the front (tsumairi), covered in cypress bark. It stands straight ahead once you pass through the tower gate, and behind it, beyond the karamon gate and openwork fence, is the main hall.
Why the Worship Hall Matters
The Sumiyoshi Shrine Worship Hall was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1954. It is first of all a firmly dated building from the late Muromachi period. Raised some 170 years after the main hall of 1370, it preserves an arrangement in which two medieval shrine buildings stand one behind the other. Yamaguchi Prefecture's tourism site notes that its detailing shows the character of the end of the Muromachi period well.
Its form is the other point of interest. With its gable turned toward worshippers and a depth of only one bay against a three-bay width, the hall presents a simple triangle of roof to anyone approaching. In orientation and shape it is the opposite of the long, sideways-facing main hall behind it.
The name attached to it says something too. In front of a main hall built by Ouchi Hiroyo stands a worship hall associated with Mori Motonari, who later ruled much of western Honshu. The pairing suggests how this first shrine of Nagato drew the devotion of the powerful from one era to the next.
What to Look For
Pass through the tower gate and the gable of the Sumiyoshi Shrine Worship Hall faces you directly: a cypress-bark gable roof over a modest three-bay front. Line up that gable with the long roof of the main hall stretching sideways behind it, and the difference in orientation between the two buildings becomes obvious.
Walk around to the side to see how shallow the hall is, just one bay deep. From beside the worship hall you can look past the karamon gate and openwork fence to the row of chidori gables on the main hall. The worship hall is as close to the main hall as ordinary visitors get.
For the details the prefecture describes as typical of the late Muromachi period, take time over the woodwork: the bracketing at the tops of the posts and the decoration in the gable.
Visiting the Worship Hall
The Sumiyoshi Shrine Worship Hall is part of the shrine precinct, and its exterior can be seen from the front and sides. No public guidance was found on entering the interior. Because the hall is used for prayers and rituals, follow the shrine office's guidance before looking inside.
No official guidance on photography was found either; the front of the worship hall is a place of prayer, so be considerate of worshippers. Directions and treasure hall details are on the Sumiyoshi Shrine (Nagato Ichinomiya) page.
